Cost of entry is cheap because many people dump them in less than 1 year when they realize how much it will cost to get it up to proper maintenance.

At least what I see on Rennlist is low prices for low-maintained 944's, high prices for high maintained ones. Seems proportional.

Let's talk in numbers.
Seems like a 944 might be listed high on CL , but could be had in very good condition for $3500
What can you get for your car?

Up here the 944s are a lot cheaper than 928s.

Have a look at the BMWs. When they are 10 years or older, the 3 series is often the same or more expensive than a 5 or a 7.

take at look at ebay items with bids 928 and 944's .
and while the prices are exactly the same we are talking a huge difference in the cars.
i understand thats the market and the gives what it will pay . but this is the dumbest thing i have ever seen.
you can find 1000 dollar 944's and you can also find 1000 dollar 928s and all the way up the scale
but in every aspect the 928 is twice the car no question about it in fact porsche thought so to when they priced out of the factory.
a very good condition 944 at 3500 then it makes no sense that my 85 euro got not one bid at 4,000.
but this is the market today a 928 is better to part out then sell but a 944 is just the opposite.
yet which was the better car ?
i will just keep mine as i do love to drive it and refuse to become a victim of insantity.

Cars with a perceived or real high cost to maintain often suffer very low resale because the overall cost of ownership includes repairs. As mentioned big BMW, Mercs all take a big hit.....

and on the bmw front it amazes me how the late 90's to 2001 prices are the same as the next models.
people just prefer the older car then the 2003 and such . i also agree i had both and the 2001 was a better car.
but i can not say that about the 944 to 928 discussion accept the gas mpg which is a real issue.

the 928 would be a the wrong choice if you had to run to the local porsche shop for repair but the hourly labor rate is the same on a 944 .

I would think the 944 would trade 25-35% lower than the 928, both in same general condition.
That's what I'm seeing at least.

The 951 would be more equivalent to the Euro in price. One came home here recently in that range.

I have a 1985 944 I'm going to be selling, and I bought a 1988 928 recently. The idea that 928 and 944 have similar values seems nuts to me, I have had each of these cars professionally appraised using multiple comps in similar exterior condition. My 1988 S4 with 134K miles came in at $15,200, while my 1985 944 with perfect paint at the time came in at only $4500. I have trouble believing that any 1988 944S could possibly fetch $15,200 unless it were a show car.

I'll be glad to sell you my 944 for $2000, because it lately got some hail damage and vandalism that estimate $3000 in repairs.

How much are you really going to save on fuel alone by switching to a 944? Figure out per year/month etc. Is it $500/year? $1,000/year? $2000/year?

imho, replacing the 928 with a 944 won't save you too much overall. Simply getting rid of the 928 and keeping only 1 car will help (insurance, operating costs, taxes etc all add up) the most.

I bought my 928 because I thought it was an amazing car for the value.

I plan to do a good bit of work myself, and I have a biz relationship with an up and coming Porsche Indy shop.

However, you can also pick up boxsters for next to nothing as well

well i did the math and between the prices today for gas and the difference premium to regular i would save about 32.50 a week to buy a non turbo 944
for $120.00 a month i'll keep the 928 .
