Question Sunroof noise?

MY 1981

I reworked the sunroof and it is now operational, yahoo and I couldn't believe I did it myself, well a little help. Mostly dismantle, clean - re-grease and replace.

Question: Does anyone else think the wind screen deflector is noisier than if it was removed? I removed mine and not only opens up the view but is a lot quieter. What you think? Anything I'm not seeing here?

It does not close like it should exactly but I think close enough. I like quiet and more view.

Thanks

I noticed the same with both my '86.5 and '81. What I did was 'de-spring' the deflector. Not remove the spring, but bend to allow deflector to come down easier. As is now the faster driven the more the deflector drops. Also notice the sunroof closes a bit easier this way.

There are a couple of adjustment screws to set how high the deflector goes. Did you try different positions before you completely removed it? In my experience very small changes in position make a huge difference in noise. I do like the idea of a larger opening though.

Thanks for the tip. I will check this out tomorrow. Good call on closing easier, I like that.

I will check into that in the morning. Adjustment must be on the flap assembly since the whole thing is only 4 screw and 2 pins. Cool, thanks.

What is up with the 2 large spaces in the rubber gasket? Would this not just let more water in? I see the drain holes but holy smokes a little less open space seems to be a better way to go. Just sayin.....

I like the added view and wind noise is completely gone.

Had a great 3 hour ride along the Mt Laguna ridge 3 times last Thursday, beautiful southern california day. Practice, practice, practice.

I like the no deflector look.

I have been working on my car since October and it has a way to go before it is dependable. Fun working on it.

I did away with mine with no regrets... of course, keeping all the old parts, just in case.

BTW - San Diego, maybe an optical illusion, but it the bottom pic it looks like you may have both rear wheels on the driver's side and I'm guessing your fronts are on the other side.

One of the "Tech Bulletins" has a board like page on which Porsche has printed a template that you can cut out to set the angle of the deflector to the factory specs.

A slight amount of can make a huge difference in wind noise...

I did scan that template in a long time ago and will see if I can find it...

Yes, thanks for the note. I remember pcar928fan thought it would be best for me to check out the wheel sizes, he noted the same thing. The tire sizes are the correct size when I checked them. I believe the tires are 205x16 in the front and 215x16 in the rear. I have not checked the wheel sizes as of yet though, unforgivable I know.....

Thanks, I did put the deflector back on yesterday just to see if the roof closes higher and it does slightly. I will try and find the template also. Thanks so much for your information.

I am going to keep mine, just in case. There has to be one around for you to procure. Anyone?

PS: I had my hen remove her teeth for obvious reasons, don't know where they are now either, haha...
