Thicker oil made a noticeable difference.

No - people that miss the search function are not going to see a sub forum either.
If there are any volunteers to writeup a conclusive oil post that is a "one stop" answer to cover 99% of the oil questions, I do not see any harm making such a post a stickie and / or adding it to the FAQ thread.

Except for the "not recommended" line for Castrol (which I don't 100% agree with) I do not recall any other 15w-50 or 20w-50 people warn not to use. So kind of redundant to mention brands, isn't it?
You left out Valvoline VR-1, Redline, Motul, Torko, Joe Gibbs.........by the time you are done, every possible oil in that weight will be listed. Which I guess isn't going to hurt anything.

Here's a chart I made some time back. I think it was Doug Hilary who suggested we should be looking fro ZDDP levels of about 1200 or higher.
Both Hacker and I had bad experiences on hot days with the Sell Rotella and you can see it has a much lower 100° viscosity than the other oils listed.
YMMV.

Wow Brad Penn really scored well in those tests for viscosity at 100 C and high temp shear. Good zinc and phosphorous too.

There is also a lot of disagreement over his main recommendation of using 5w-40.

Hi,
Following what the owner's manual recommends for my car, I use Mobil1 15W50 and wheter it's hotter or colder, in traffic or in highway I get very consistent oil pressure readings, between 2,5/3 at idle and almost other times needle on 5!
Just my 2 cents....
Regards
