Hello everyone. I recently purchased a 1991 928 S4 with 82,000 miles. It came from Tampa Florida.

The car starts fine but does not idle. I have purchased and installed new spark plugs, wiring, Ignition Control Modules. Rotors and Dist Cap in the mail.

When checking the connections I found that several of the connectors are crap. The Crank Position Sensor litterally disentigrated upon being disconnected. Now another connector at the right front of the engine has done the same. I have ordered the parts, and waiting on them. I have also ordered synthetic vacuum lines, and new fuel lines as well.

I plan to replace all the hoses, and belts shortly.

The car is in great shape (except missing the rear wing). PO removed it.

Is there anything else I need to check / replace?

research thrust bearing failure and how to check crankshaft end play..... if that is all O K then idle stabilizer. The computer opens and closes the idle stabilizer valve to regulate the idle speed.

Congratulations!
Assuming it's an auto (S4), one of the first things you need to do is check your thrust bearing. Do a search, lots of data on here.
If that's good, sounds like you may want to consider the ever-popular "top end refresh". Again, tons of good info here. Check the bearing first. Also, extremely important, when was the timing belt last done?

Timing belt was done at 61,000 miles. All documented in the service guide. I will research the thrust bearing and will post pics soon.

Thanks

Harvey

Harvey,
Did you have a PPI done before you bought the car?
If not, you may want to consider that you're a couple hours southeast of one of our major sponsors here.

No i did not have a PPI done before purchasing the car. I had a relative that lived near the guy, and he looked at the car. No smoke coming from the car, just had a rough idle. They drove around for about 30 minutes, nothing was leaking, just a rough idle. Everything works on the car. The price was attractive and he was in foreclosure on his house. All in all I think I got a great deal for 10k.

Search any post by a guy named Dwayne. In his signature line, go to "dwaynes garage".

There you will find the intake refresh and other amazing pictorials to help you get started.

You will want to replace more pieces in the intake than those you listed.

It will likely need motor mounts and I would probably go through the timing belt process as well since it is a nuanced job on a 928 where there are pieces that need to be replaced that usually aren't..

A few engine bay pictures would help, but at 80K miles and what you found as indicators already you are looking at the typical 928 midlife service.

Also, search for endplay measurement in quotes using advanced search for threads by Bill Ball. That will help you really understand the thrust bearing measurement and the preventative actions needed.

These are really cool cars, hope it works out well for you and welcome.

Welcome - you sound like you're going to fit right in here.. between researching, buying the right bits etc.

As noted above, check crank end-play immediately, before spending any money on the car. Thread here on how to do it: (thanks to Bill Ball for the write-up!)

How many years ago was the belt & water pump done? It's not just a mileage issue.

But like everyone said:

Thrust Bearing is a must check and release.

Idle Stabilizer needs checkin' next.

I will check the thrust bearing in the next few days. The car is sitting in my garage awaiting the attention it deserves. When I check the thrust bearing should I go ahead and put a new one in? Or just check the flex plate and release it?
