Default Speed new show Car Warriors - Porsche 928s

During the preproduction planning for Car Warriors there was much discussion about turning the teams loose on two 928s. Which they would modify customize hot rod during one of the 72 hour marathon "builds". However, when they realized that even though the cars are cheap there was little available aftermarket to easily do much with one, other cars were selected. The show is quite real with some interesting projects being done in just 72 hours. The photo is George Barris (main judge) one of his cars (Hotwheels Manx) which I bought and me a couple weeks ago. The shows airs the 23rd on Speed.

I don't get it... Even though there is little in the aftermarket available exclusively for 928s, you can customize with universal parts from Jegs or Summit Racing catalogs. Hell I did it with my exhaust system and there's even the ability to do stainless steel braided hoses and vacuum lines. I'm not quite sure what exactly they are looking for custom. As far as interiors go, they could just rip the seats out, throw some aftermarket in, change the carpets, put brushed/billet aluminum running boards.

The fact they didn't choose the 928 for customization makes me feel like I have more creativity than them.

You need to see some of what they create in the different shows, pretty wild stuff. I was on set on several different occasions and these guys are quite skilled. I might not like some of what they did but you have to respect their talent.

The hot rod fabricators are exceptionally talented.

Jim, does it actually say, above, that you bought the Manx?

Jim, I agree. My Dad went to school with a guy who has a hot rod shop in South San Diego that has done some amazing work on muscle cars. He did a 383 stroker on a 928 with a Hillborn style injection just because he was 'bored'. In the end he swaped back in the S4 engine and sold the car. He took that same motor though and shoved it in a Monte Carlo. Beautiful work though...

I will be watching the show that's for sure.

Yes I did buy the Manx for my daughter it was owned by the CEO of Mattel and was the car used for the hotwheels Manx they made. I drove it from Costa Mesa to George's shop in Hollywood then loaded it onto a trailer and shipped it to Texas After George signed the dash !

I feel like I'm doing the Frankenburger Time Warp; above I see what looks a lot like a dune buggy. I realize that may be a disservice to what the creators did, but that is my brain reference. And then, Jim, there is that bearded guy in the picture. I hope your daughter is near the Gulf, that car just really needs to be on sand or around it.

Narnia!

The buggy is NOT a tranmutated 928 but one of George's cars from many years ago which he had not seen for a LONG TIME until I drove it to his shop. The red car is also NOT a 928 just something else I found !

Jim,
I remember that Manx! IIRC, it was the Meyer's Manx in one of Hot Wheels' early series.
That bug-eye Meyers dune buggy body was always my favorite. I had to have the *** gas powered dune buggy when I was 10. It was $10 new, and I wore it out. Seems to have been a better investment than a new 928 :

Well just wheel in some machine tools and make stuff. Remember the Boyd show? The machinist was the most valuable part of the builds, cranking out custom billet parts.
There's only so much you can do with a bunch of tatooed folks operating welders and grinders and interacting in colorful ways!

If they ever did a 928, I vote for Mike to build it on their show!

Although, I have seen one really good 308 GTB converted to a 288 GTO. The whole frame was changed to support a 1,700 HP Chevy engine. I think it was Bob Norwood that did it. I have a pic of it on a dyno in a book.

There is also another conversion running around with a turbocharged 355 engine in it too.
