Another dumb question clutch related
My dumb question of the day has to do with the 3 little "U" clips used to install the double clutch assembly. What happens if they are not removed? Not my car, came across one that suppossedly works fine, clutch and pressure plate was replaced xx thousand miles ago, closer inspection reveals all 3 clips are still under the bolts. I couldn't drive the car, owner has lost the key, so he claims, MY 83. Several other things suggest running away, just wondering what this might do.....seems like it would be a bear to adjust, and even then only one disk would be doing all the work?

Those clips hold the pressure plate partially (or fully) released, to make assembly easier (i.e. possible).
If they are not removed, then the effect is the same as having the clutch pedal partially depressed-- the clutch may not engage at all, or if it engages then it will likely slip a lot-- to the severe detriment of the clutch.

How can you see them?
Am thinking they'd sling out with the first application of the clutch.
That's how you install them. Attach come-along to the rear crossmember and the actuation arm, then lightly tighten to allow space for the loops to be installed.

I have the clutch / flywheel assembly out of the car, and apart. It is not in "bad" shape, neither of the clutch plates nor the pressure plates show anything out of the ordinary. The back presure plate has some minor ridges, just a few thousanths of an inch, the flywheel side is a bit blued, but no warping nor any ridges. The center pressure plate is clean and unmarked on both sides. I am not certain how this clutch pack worked....but it did.....plenty of undisturbed dirt grease and oil on the bellhousing when I dug into it. The rest of the car is evidently going to undergo the famous and ill advised LT1 conversion and he is planning to put a straight axle in the back and use a conventional transmission upfront. should really be choice when done. I saw this same person convert a 356 to VW running gear. Extremely well done, just completely ill advised, just like this 928, or how to take a $10k car and convert it into junk....

ive only used the little "u"s a few times. its possible to install, but easier if they are in there. when tightening the final 6 bolts on the clutch to the flywheel, they will fall out.
