Tie-rod removal?
Anyone know how to remove the outer steering tie rods from a 79 928? It looks like I need a large but very narrow wrench, but I'm not certain of the size. Special Porsche tool?
Anyone have any tips for getting new rubber boots on the inner rods? I've spent too much of my life trying to get oily rubber to do what I want. That's not a dirty joke...

I'm sure someone will join in, but you might try search while you are waiting. It sounds like you already have parts, but 928 International (714-632-9288) and Roger Tyson (817-430-2688) are suppliers of parts and technical know-how.

You'll need a 22mm, 32mm wrenches to loosen (or 7/8" & 1 1/4"), counterhold the tie rod inner. The boot slips over that pretty easily and won't have to undo the outter tie rod. I used WD40 and a cut out yogurt container to slip the boot over the end. Here's the RW thread I started: http://reutterwerk.com/forums/showth...ght=rack+boots

Just finished this on an '80 today.
This one had the rubber/steel, non sliding rack stops on the rack, so the only way to get a 32mm wrench in there was to grind away about 1/8th of an inch off one of my wrenches so it was more narrow. Fit perfect and they came right off.

Inner tie rods separate from the rack as Sean describes. Be sure to counterhold the rack (the sliding part) aas you break he trie rod loose.

It sounds like you mean the "inner" tie rod end.
I counter-hold the rack with a wrench and then grab the inner tie rod end with a vice grips. Yeah, a vice grips. Just tighten that things down. Lever between the two wrenches to loosen the threads so you don't damage the steering rack.

SeanR, I think you get what I'm saying, normal open-ended wrenches are too wide to fit around the ball-joint inner end of the tie-rod. On the inner part (underneath the boot) there's nothing to counter-hold. Should I use vice grips?

You can use a 22mm wrench on the rack to counter hold. It has a spot for it. If I didnt have this one buttoned up already I'd take a pic to show you. Sorry.
Here is a pic of the wrench I ground down. As to why it has fur on it, I have no idea, but i laughed when I saw the pic.
