Remember, this is a very active 928 technical forum where we come to discuss all types of technical issues and repairs, including options for repairs, standards of craftmanship, etc, about this specific automobile, from introduction in 1977 and since. You can both learn a lot and probably share a lot here. So, welcome!

I think mechanical restoration here ( and most other places ) means just that. Strip down. Complete inspection and replacement of all parts to achieve original specifications. You described (without being very specific about parts replaced) a refresh. New gaskets, hoses, etc? That's a pretty good start by the way. I've worked on 8 so far and none have needed significant engine work, just reseal. Others haven't been so lucky, but the car has a strong foundation.

Yes, more paint is a bad sign. These aren't rusty old early mustangs and don't need the extra love of a thick layer of enamel.
In fact, I view it as a car dealer method for hiding things. The one rust place I've found on them is the emissions line conducting gas vapor under the car. Did you see corrosion on that one? All three cars I've worked on from the north have had rusted-thru emissions lines.

And, I also agree with you, these cars get dragged out of a dusty place, hastily put back on the highway without refresh, usually by a kid that pokes 10 holes in the gas tank with his childish stereo crap. Then run a little while, then go down for the count. I've rescued a couple like that and its infinitely more difficult than grabbing one as it surfaces the first time.

They are bought by many of us here, or on Pelican, for $500 to $3500 and brought back to life. People who want one come here for advice.

People here on this DIY-heavy technical forum can help answer your questions about the cars.

All trannys and rear-ends produce tork...You can calculate how much HP something has by converting the tork of said item to HP mathematically. Different gears in rear-end will give you different HP rating at the wheels. NOT THAT WE DID THIS.

gotta go guys work calls.... be back latter.....thanks.....
Anyway....it's a real nice 31 year old 1980 928 in above average condition for its year, and what we feel is the price it will take for us to part with it. I won’t have any problem driving this old beat up 928 this upcoming season here in NY. Hope I don’t get to embarrassed.__:0)

Since you own a number of different 928's. How do you like CIS vs. Electronic ignition???
We find electronic is more hands off the CIS......

I can remember back in the day my dad and his cronies would build a vehicle for what we call four- wheeling now, but which was based on two wheel drive, but in which they would put two transmissions. With that they got a really wide selection of gearing including very very low gearing which would let that sucker crawl. I guess what they didn't realize was the they were adding a lot of horse power at the same time. Go figure.

In the 928 with the space between the engine and the transmission and the space behind the differential I'll bet someone could add as many as three extra transmissions and perhaps end up with about a thousand horsepower or more. I wonder why no one has thought of that before.

I am willing to bet that this will not end well.

To pay a mechanic 3-5 grand on a 928 and then say it is going to make it in a great mechanical condition is laughable IMHO.

To me a restoration means every thing on the car has been through, motor, TT, trans, axles, electrics, wheel bearings, radiator, all the hoses, man, you can have over 3 grand in parts on just hoses.

BTW, I know my Porsche mechanic pretty well also.

Although these cars are mostly alluminum all undercarrage is not. In MY book, if you want them to last you have to wire bush, clean and repaint.

I've not had the pleasure of troubleshooting the CIS myself, just over the shoulders of others.
Looks complicated. Its a real art that constitutes a big arrow in your quiver if you know how to work on them from my perspective.

Looking forward to trying in the future, though.

No, they are heavily galvanized. You don't want to disturb that coating with wire.
That's why they are such an incredible foundation for saving.

Now, in Buffalo area, you could be looking at a different dynamic, but pulling them from other NE states I have not seen exterior corrosion of consequence underneath. If its white, you are alright. Do check under the fuse panel / firewall pad on the INSIDE though. Found three this fall with extensive wetness, two with rust. But the metal is so thick it was completely removable to bare metal.

And they are not like, say, a Volvo 1800 that would have corrosion run rampant beneath the undercoating.

Ok, I'm in on this train wreck.

Again, how did you get that much HP out an engine that is rated at 220hp from the factory?

Why did you spray paint a load of things that should not have been painted?

Why would you use a cheap vacuum kit on the engine?

You say the engine was torn down to the heads, please tell me what was replaced when the heads were off the car?

What parts were changed on the clutch, and did you change both clutch disks? Throw out bearing? Pilot bearings? Clutch arm ball cup?

What water pump was installed?

Why did you not change the oil pan gasket when it is obviously been leaking?

I can list a bunch more questions, but for now I'll leave it at this.
