Well, I carry 1/2" sockets (metric + standard + crank socket) + rachet + bar, 1/4" socket set, 2x normal range of standard box-ends, 2x normal range of metric box-ends, visegrips, pliers, crescents, pry bar, spare battery, wire + wire stripper, light bulbs (factory spare kit of them), bottle jack, floor jack, factory jack, spare tire + air compressor, tension tool, tb, washer fluid, oil, brake fluid, rotor + dist cap, oil filter, funnel, spare belts, engine degreaser, and some rags.
But I don't think you'd want all that . . .

I carry a set of BluePoint tools, it is a good basic set in a plastic travel box, plus I carry two metal attache sized foam lined boxes with various relays, a spare LH, DVOM, wiring diagrams, jumpers, and special tools that are not in the Bluepoint kit that are needed sometimes on a 928, plus a foam lined box with a extra MAF in it, and sometimes I carry a spare fuel pump if I am going to a 928 event.
Lots of flashlights, gloves and rags.
I do not carry them for my car, but for others that may need help on the way.
For me, I carry a cell phone, extra magazines and a backup, usually my little 380 Mustang.
It would not be good for some one like me, Sean, or any other person who works on these cars for money to break down.

I carry my basic hand tools and a good socket set. Also some spare fuses, a cell phone and AAA premium tow coverage. Acopy of the 928 owners club roadside assistance list is invaluable as many 928 owners across North America will come to help and are familiar with the car or know where to get qualified help. As for the 928, it loves to run the open road. Just sit back and enjoy the drive.

Ya know--
If I'm worried enough about a possible failing FP or EZK or LH relay that I want to carry new spares, I usually store the new ones in the correct sockets in the CE panel where I know they are safe, and put the old spares in the trash. Relays are so cheap that any worry at all deserves a replacement. Do it in the calm, cool, well-ventilated and well-equipped confines of your own garage at home, rather than scratching your head in the rain on the side of the road someplace.
When I left for Texas for OCIC a couple summers ago, I went through a little mental exercise on what tools to take. Turned out that the list was the same as the tools that ride in the car all the time. The rest of the list was a wash bucket and stuff to spiff it up a little once we got there.
Best things to have along are your smart phone to get to the list for advice if needed, your brain, friends in other 928's, and your up-to-date comprehensive PM's. Top up fluids if needed, and hit the road! If there's something you suspect might interrupt your trip, fix it now in the driveway.

I have put together everything on the list everyone has suggested, I already have the 100 mile AAA towing package. A must for all vintage car guys. I have done 90% of all the work on this car myself and I am certainly not afraid of wrenching on it. I added a fire bottle to the list as well. I went to the local motorcycle shop and bought a bottle of rain repellent for the windshield since RainX and down graded.
It does rain in Oregon so I am told. If it snows, (lets not go there)

For my s4 I've got a small flashlight, a voltmeter, a couple of spare relays, an off brand set of sockets and my laptop with pet and the wsm's loaded on it.
And a credit card.
