Default Cup Alloys & price fixing by Porsche-apart UK - watch out!

Just a heads up for everyone.
Have been watching a few sets of Cup Alloys on ebay for 928 & 968 with ET65 & ET55 offsets for the front. They keep disappearing?
I asked Porsche-apart if they had any and they said yes but £1000 plus for a set!!! Bit steep and top end!
When I probed them about this they said they buy them for around 500 off ebay and re-sell them for £1000.
I told them good luck if people were mad enough to pay that price.

Yesterday the 2 sets I missed had their auction ended early - Both sellers have told me that Porsche-apart have bought them & the auctions ended early.

Beware of these guys trying to inflate the prices or Cup Alloys. The 968 set I was watching were ET65 on the fronts and were going for around £250 with a few hours to go for the set before the listing was ended early. Even if they went for £400 and you got each wheel refurbished it only costs £50 per wheel so £800 MAX. Porsche Apart selling them for £1500 refurbished or £1000 in current state is just greed.

Hope everyone ignores Porsche-apart and their Cup Alloy sales.....They must think we are all MUGS!

Buy from them at your own peril!

I will keep hunting for my Cup Alloys and beat those guys to the next set!

Hi

You could always copy that message to Ebay...as they are an Ebay seller they might get punished or not be allowed to sell on Ebay...worth a try anyway...

They have an appalling reputation for ripping Porsche owners off anyway, most people like myself wouldn't use them on principle...

All the best Brett

Ethics and ebay don't sort of mix,
Beat them at their own game, make early cash offers.

Maybe I should get my bids in more quickly.
Howeverm this thread is showing high on the search engines - so maybe this will put an end to Porsche-apart's "Quick Buck" making scheme anyway. Or at least warn people off so as to be forwarned.

Well finally got my new set of wheels sorted out - for now anyway. After months of searching for a set of Cup 1 17" alloys with ET65 offsets I put that challenge on hold and went for 2nd best to change my 928 slots.

I have just bought some cup alloys from a 911 - twist style - with ET55 front and Et55 rear

Front set: 99636212400 7 J x 17 ET 55, Rear set: 99636212800 9J x 17 ET 55

I thought I was safe with the front offsets being ET55 and "just in", but then read on Phil Chadwick's article off Rennlist on 928 wheels and got a bit concerned that ET55 on the rear need a 35mm spacer? I was so caught up on trying to find the ultimate ET65 or 2nd best ET55 offsets for the front that I didn't think about spacers for the rear? I don't fancy fitting spacers unless I really have to?

Following on from this...the 7J fronts have 205/50/ZR17 Michelin Pilot Sport N rated tyres on them but on the 928 wheels article it states the 7J should take 225/50/17
Likewise the 9J rears have 255/40/ZR17's on them but with the ET55 offset this Article from Phil shows they may need for offsets?

Got my new wheels fitted last night. No fitting problems and no fouling problems anywhere that can be seen. I guess I could fit some spacers on the rear to move the tyres outwards if thats deemed to be an advantage, but guess only 5 or 7mm would be sensible going on what I can see. The fronts I will look to change to the wider 224/45/17 as recommended - shame as these are a new set of Michelin Sport tyres....guess I should put them on EBay. As for the Rear tyres, they are almost worn out, still legal but too close to the wear rib for my liking. Have just been offered a couple of Hankook's Ventus Sports which would fit & have 7mm tread so as good as new. Very tempted to fit these so I have a good set of grip on the rear - but has anyone tried these on the rear of a 928? Are they OK for normal fast road use?

Will be putting my 928 slots up for sale if anyone is interested on here?

Hi Steve, I,m running Hancook Ventus on all four Cup 1,s, 9inch rears are 255/ 40ZR /17 with 17mm spacers , no issues and overall a competent tyre.
Hope this helps ?

Hi Ken
Thanks for that info. How close do the 17mm spacers push your 9J's to the outer wing lip? Or do you have GTS style flared arches?

Hi Steve., my rear spacers were originally 25mm, which suited the original flat face alloys, however 25mm was too wide for the 9j Cups, so had them machined down to 17mm, when fitted there was around 5mm between tyre and wheel arch lip.., I GENTLY with both hands and some thick gloves pulled the arch out till it was about 10mm, and that was ok.
Here,s a picture of the way the rears look.

This pic makes them look really close I know however two years and no contact

Hi Ken
Wow, great looking car and wheels!
Love the arches too. Wish I could get mine to flare like that without any kinks.
Very Nice

Hi Steve.., it,s really easy to achieve a slight flare, a good tip is to warm the paintwork, this makes the paint flexible,( Hairdrier or Heatgun ) and avoids paint crack, then gently tug with both hands till you get some clearance your happy with. It does,nt take much effort as it,s quite thin .
Hope this helps
