Default Transmission oil leak - not a pan gasket

1984 5 spd, LSD.

Ok - I've searched under "transmission leak" and "differential leak" with no luck. Could I be the first person with this problem?

I have a small leak that loses about one drop every 3 days or so. It must be minor because I've noticed it for a few months but checked the fluid level this weekend and was still full.

The leak is coming from what appears to be a round rubber plug or seal about halfway between the trans drain plug and the torque tube. Its round, about 1.5 inches in diameter, roughly the same size as the drain plug.

I checked the on-line PET system at DC Automotive and scanned the transmission parts listed at 928 International and 928 Specialists and don't see anything descibed that looks like this.

Does anyone know what this part is? How hard to replace? If needed I can get a picture later this week.

you do know that there are 2 drain plugs on the transmission.
one in the rear cover and one on the front bottom edge of the trans,
if either one is loose it can leak,
the front plug on my 86 was loose and it leaked about 2 or 3 drops a day if the car was driven.
Also the top shift rod seal can also leak ,
this is a lot harder to fix ,
the oil will run down the trans on the front then drip off the bottom front edge.

Also you may be talking about the plug at the bottom TT / trans mating area ,

this will be the input shaft seal going bad this will require the trans to be removed to replace the seal its a bit difficult to do

Thanks. I don't think I must've explained well. There is a really clear picture on page 34-1 of the WSM. Its the round seal right above the magnetic drain plug below the torque tube. I'll scan the pic in tomorrow and repost.

Edit -
"You mentioned this: Also you may be talking about the plug at the bottom TT / trans mating area"

That wounds like what it is. I'll look up Input Shaft Seal on PET and see if that's it.

Thanks.

He is talking about the speed sensor I think.

Nope, that is not what he is talking about, I suspect you have a bad input shaft seal.

I know a picture is worth 1000 words. Will get under there this weekend and get a picture and repost. I Googled for 928 transmission images and all pics seem to be from the side, top or back. None from the front. This will make much more sense once I can post a photo. It is literally 2-inches above the front magnetic drain plug.

I looked at the online PET from AutoAtlanta and saw no reference to an "Input Shaft Seal" on the transmission section. There is something called a "Shaft Sealing Ring" which is above the torque tube.

http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...-86/302-00.php

But as I posted originally the leaking plug is actually below the torque tube, and just above the drain plug.
