source for 911 606 108 00 - timing mark sender
Just curious what others are doing to source this part? I will be getting ready for my annual refresh (once the snow goes away) and am collecting parts up that I will be replacing or should have on hand.
One item that has come up (the fact that it is NLA has been flagged on this board on a previous post), is the timing mark sender - 911 606 108 00 - used in the 928 as well as the 911 (and probably the 944 and 968).
I spent some time looking for a source last night to no avail. So the question I have ... what are others doing about sourcing this sensor or is the sensor just so reliable that this is not an issue (just fix the wires/connector and it will last forever)?
Appreciate any input on this. Thanks folks
Glenn

Check with Roger Tyson (928s R Us), if he can't source it or a replacement, check with Mark Anderson @ 928 International for a good used one.

Timing mark sender: its unused for operational needs 928, instead I think it serves as a diagnostic sensor.
I think you would want to consider refreshing the pulse sender, aka CPS crank position sensor, 944 606 115 00
Its this one that senses crank position and signals it to the computer system
For the 86 car (including 86.5) you can find it pictured in the PET. Check out the electrical section, Main Group 9. Should be the first "picture page" after the picture page that shows the 32V wires and caps, not very deep in the section. You will see that the 911 part-no. piece appears to have a cylindrical end which is bolted in the car to the organ pipes and is the input for a diagnostic sensor.
The 944 part number, the piece you really seek, ends in a plug. I replace them when I can afford it during a refresh. Roger and Mark and Jeannie all have them.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I do need one of these (for my 911 as well - folks on that board are dealing with the same supply issue) as I am a bit **** about my 928. If there is a spot for a sender, I will have the correct one there (installed and functioning). Hence, regardless whether the 928 brains use this, I will have one
I had a look at 928 International website and did not see one.
Guess I will need to wait for Roger or Mark to chime in.
For others ... if the sender is damaged, are folks just hot worrying about it? Curious that Porsche has a sender in the 928 that is not used in the electronics to run the car.
Cheers

Its a worthless appendage.
Has anyone, anywhere, ever used it?
How would it fail?
I guess theoretically it could be used to confirm the harmonic balancer integrity. So maybe the question is "how can we read it?"
I understand the desire to make the car as good as it can be!

I have been asked this question before and as far as I know it is NLA. I will talk to Porsche in the morning and check it out again.
I sell the CPS for $60.

This sensor is worthless. I wouldn't bother even re-installing the old one, much less looking for a new one...unless you are building a PCA concours car...and even then there are probably less than a couple of judges that would notice it was not there.

Timing Mark Sender 911 606 108 00 (NLA)
My engine is out at the moment and I cant get replacement timing mark sender. I'm reading here where knowlegeable guys say it isnt necessary anyway.
However another expert writes on another forum:
http://www.justanswer.com/car/3ilx2-...ine-power.html
"the fuel pump only runs during cranking, and even then it only runs for 1-2 seconds, unless the engine starts. If the engine doesn't start, the pump turns off and you have to re-start to make it prime the system again. So you normally don't get power to the fuel pump just by turning the ignition power on.
You can test or force teh fuel pump to run by jumping the terminals 30 and 87 on the fuel pump relay socket in the relay board. (Under the passenger's side kickboard I think, as it is on earlier models)The no spark problem may be due to a failed crank position or reference sensor. "
This worries me !! Will my fuel pump run without this sender ?

The sender referenced in the article you linked is the Crank Position Sensor. It is available from multiple sources and is the one Roger Tyson referred to in post #6. The "Timing Mark Sender" that is the subject of this thread is a completely different sensor and as you've no doubt read it is completely irrelevant to the operation of the car. Your car will definitely run without it.

Thanks Mike. Every day I learn a little more about my 928 in this excellent forum. That article must have been referring to the "pulse sender" 944 606 115 00 which I was able to replace with new.
