Default Early 16V internal coolant leaks/mixing fluids

I have seen, heard of, and read of so many issues like this on the early 16V 928s; but not so many reports of internal water leaks on later models. Is there any real explanation for this? I have seen photos of what old, acidic coolant can do to these blocks. My '84 was a daily driver for many years and the cooling system was regularly serviced in that time. Then one day, all of a sudden, I started the car and white smoke came rolling out of the exhaust. Checked the oil. Yum, milkshake. Parked the car for 10 years. Now the car has resumed daily driver status again after an engine swap a few months back.

The gaskets from the original engine looked okay, surprisingly. Now I'm wondering if I have a cracked head. Anyway, I was just curious what those of you who regularly work on 928s thought about this. Have I got it all wrong and are there no more reports of these issues on 16V 928s than 32V cars? If there are more reports of mixing fluids and such on older 928s, then why?
