what the heck!?! I've called 5 shops and no one wants to touch it. The answers I've gotten range from "no we cant do it" to "oh no! take it to the dealer!" One shop I talked to said they could do it, and I asked if the could do it without unloading the suspension. The tech's response was, "how am I supposed to do that? I gotta be able to rotate the wheel"... even Sears said, "no, we don't do Porsches because they require special tools".

I'll keep expanding my radius I suppose. Anyone have a recommendation in the Sac/Roseville area?

The modern Hunter machines do not require raising the car.

Often times 928 owners have to educate the alignment shop on the way to align our cars.

Stay persistent.

Gotta be someone in Sacramento area that knows how to do a 928. I'm sure one of the locals will chime in here shortly with a suggestion on where to go.

You can raise the car and still do a proper alignment - the WSM shows this procedure.....basically pulling the nose back down once on the alignment equipment.

That's how my guy does it. He has service records working on 928's going back to 1982.

oh god, dont do that! it has been tryied by top shops with horrible results in the end. something about the bushings or design, just doesnt cut it with that technique. I had 10 years of nightmares before I figured this all out in the 90s. then, i was able to almost align my car in my driveway. (not quite , but much better than the shops were doing)

go to sears, wheel works, they have hunters. dont raise the car, you are good to go!

There is a factory approved method for pulling down the suspension using a special tool that works just fine. Whether or not a shop can do it properly, now that is another subject entirely.

There are 4 Sears Auto Centers within 30 miles of you. At least one of them should have a Hunter DSP-400 and be able to align your car without lifting it. I have had the GT done twice at Sears with in-spec results both times.

FINALLY! Found a shop nearby with a hunter hawkeye that has done a few 928s.

Their rack is a little less than 2 yrs old. Should be good, yeah?

I've had several of mine aligned at Sears. It is part of their corporate inspection checklist that they raise the car to inspect the wheel bearing and ball joints for wear. You have to be very adamant that you do not want the car raised for any reason to check those items. You also have to watch them to make sure that they don't raise the car, because they can raise it in less than a minute on those Hunter machines. Just stay there and watch them. Once they finally gett the reflector thingies on the wheels, you're usually home free and they generally do a good job.

Watching the tech is 100% mandatory. Even if you talk to the service manager (or whatever they're called now) the message may not get to the tech and he probably won't believe it anyway. BTDT.

And yes, you can align a 928 after lifting and pulling down. However, the only way to be sure it has been pulled down far enough is to measure ride height before and after and keep pulling until after equals before. The WSM procedure - without measurement - is probably fine for any 928 that's less than a couple of years old and has less than a couple of tens of thousands of miles in it....

There is a shop here in Stockton called Western Alignment that did a great job on sharky...they don't raise the car at all..they have a pit the car is driven up too...
