Default $800 Porsche instrument woes.

Hi All,

Before going into the hospital the other night, I decided to get my fuel gauge working and check to see if my odometer gear is bad. I pulled the instruments and and disassembled the cluster. I cleaned everything up, and resoldered a couple bad traces on the speedometer. After reassembling, the gauges are now acting screwy. for example, when I turn on the key the speedo goes to 40 MPH. When I turn on the parking lights the speedo goes to 0 and the parking light indicator illuminates very dimly. With lights full on the speedometer goes to 40 again. The econometer and fuel gauge bounce around to different readings as I hit switches.

Currently I have pulled the cluster again and will reclean and check it. The vertical plug tab has snapped off, so I need to hot glue it back together before I reassemble. I have also cleaned all grounds in the car and removed each fuse and cleaned and reinstalled them.

I just wanted to see if anyone has any further Ideas to troubleshoot this.

I'm also digging through the wiring diagrams looking for 3 loose wires coming out of the ignition switch harness without much luck. They are Red/Black, Red/Blue and Black/Red. I've included a photo:

Last thing for now, I've been reading up on the self cancelling indicators. Here is a pic of my wheel and stalks. I think my wheel should have a tab on the backside that seems to be completely gone.

I appreciate any help you guys can toss me.

Thanks,

Mark

No idea on the gauge issue. A guess would be the grounds aren't all attached, or are in the wrong place, but hopefully someone else will know from experience.

The tab on the back of the steering wheel is missing - its part of the horn contact ring - 928 347 099 00

I tried it both ways. I think I may have gotten some grease on the backside, I've cleaned it off and will try reinstalling the cluster tomorrow.

Check all the connectors to the headlight switches, etc, not just the instrument cluster. Some can be swapped around and drive voltage where they shouldn't and can create some wierd symptoms.

Just did a test fit and noticed everything working correctly except fuel and temp maxing out when I turn on the lights... jiggled the light switch and it started working correctly, so my next step is to clean the headlight switch.

For the speedometer, check and clean the connector in the corner of the spare tire well.

Voltmeter sounds like a faulty connection between the flexible circuit and the meter.

Yeah, I've checked, sprayed, cleaned and brushed the connector in the spare tire well three-four times. I think the problem is in the CE panel, or in the connection to the flexible circut.

Sorry for hijack
