Hi Brett
I know the older models had the twin muffler out pipes going to the side of the car. These I have bought are similar to the photo's Hilton posted of Paul Anderson's rear muffler. I must ask Paul about his rear muffler when I am down there in a few weeks. That setup certainly looks nice and I bet it does sound awesome!

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve

My S2 "DID" have the twin outlets to the side corner but when I saw Pauls new rear box and discussed it versus my previous RMB taking into account my Nitrous needs we decided to fit it ...

It was quite funny as that new box obviously comes straight out the back so I had no hole for it.... so Paul got out the biggest hole saw you have ever seen in your life, licked his finger and put a mark on the rear PU where he thought the centre of the new hole should go....I was wincing to say the least lol...

Paul just spun up the saw and drilled the hole...perfectly lol

Its a great box and definitely improves the sound...even over an RMB....

Worth getting if Paul has some made , and personally I prefer the rear pipes to come out straight backwards rather than out of the rear corner...

All the best Brett

Hi Brett
I know the feeling when you down with Paul...its poetry in motion!
I have shot him a text message to see if he has any available and the price?

I measured my two spare back muffler boxes that I have - 1 is the std oval exit pipe from twin outlets and the other is the one I mention at the start of this thread - the twin outlet tail pipes.

Interestingly enough, the twin pipes that go into the oval muffler are of a fabricated design with a weld seam down both sides of the pipes running axially. They measure 54mm diameter OD from top to bottom and 57mm from side to side - but this is across the weld seams so not the true diameter of the pipe.

The new muffler I bought has the twin outlet pipes and they are decidedly larger with 60.34mm diameter OD. They are of a solid pipe design and are only welded at the joint with the muffler body. They look very similar outlet pipe designs to the Paul Anderson one's from the muffler to the pipe tip.

Can't wait to get them on and see how they change the exhaust note & resonance.

I didn't get chance to weigh them today...but might try that next weekend as I have the front of my 928 up in the air as I'm changing fan belts and checking for my oil cooler leak at the moment. So 1 Job at a time!

Thanks

Steve

Here's a photo of the Rear Twin Pipe Muffler I bought.
Just need to clean them up and polish them twin pipes!

I do have 1 chrome tailpipe but only one....so either need to find a new pair of Chrome tail pipes or find a matching one to go with the one I already have.

Far too raspy sounding for me...would this humble down the note a little?

I want a nice low thrum of V8 whoopass, not what the current setup gets me.
Same here. I had an RMB on an otherwise stock 89 exhaust. Sounded fine. When I added an X-pipe it became LOUD with unpleasant resonances at mild cruising speeds. Swapped in 87-88 big resonator sections for the small 89s, and it's just about perfect.

Bill,

I did exactly the same thing with my '89 that I drive to, from, and on the various tracks in the east. TOOOOO loud and obnoxious with the X pipe, small central mufflers and the RMB. Put on a set of '88 central mufflers with the X and RMB, and it now is comfortable to drive on the highway, and many other DE attendees comment that it sounds GREAT on the track at full throttle.

You'll find that 400, then 800 then 1600 Wet and dry followed by Metal Polish will have the tailpipes as shiny as. They are stainless. No need for Chrome covers.

Thanks Jon

Will try the polishing route as you suggest and see how it turns out. Got nothing to loose in trying that approach. I can always lacquer them afterwards if they look good enough

Cheers
