May have cam sprocket problem

De-greasing will make it easier to work on and allow you to more accurately pinpoint the source of leaks, by getting rid of oil blown to and covering other areas.
You can tape off and bag susceptible things like split rack boots, ignition, etc .... de-grease ... blow excess water off with compressed air (being careful you don't blow water into susceptible places) ... drive to dry off ... then inspect and work on a clean vehicle.
The effort will be worth it.

After I drain the coolant I will start the degreasing. I plan to use a large baby pool and do most of the cleaning by hand scrubbing. I like your cups Dave, I think they are the best looking rim for a 928 and I will be on the watch for some.

Back to my initial concern on the drivers side cam gear. let me see if I can explain it a little better. I could not get a video but maybe when the covers are off. Ok, when I look down the inspection hole while the car is running, I see the belt moving side to side on the cam gear. It is not going off of the cam gear, my guess is that it is moving about 1/8 of an inch side to side. The cam gear itself looks to be straight. This is only on the drivers side. The other side tracks perfect. I hope to have the covers off in a few days but for right now does anyone have a guess on the cause?

Three Wheelin'
The only thing you can do...
When you look in the belt vent holes you can observe that the outer egde of the cam gears are black/ dark grey = coating color if the coating is worn you'll see an dark outer edge with shine silver on the inside going under the belt. The slighty movement or difference in tracking aren't a factor (mine was doing the same) at this stage as your goin to pull it anyway only than you'll find out for sure. If your lucky your cam gears can be recoated if there bright and shiny silver in the middle of the teeth you're better of to replace all gears on the front and you''ll be read for your next 115K miles.
Good luck

I'd be replacing the stepped bolt and the plastic bushes in the tensioner arm, no matter what, as they are critical to correct alignment of the arm. That's my stab in the dark as one possible cause of the tracking problem.
Follow all the other recommendations on wear item inspection and replacement and I'm sure you'll solve the problem.
Until you get the covers off we're only guessing though.

What do you guys think about using a racing belt. Is the idea just to give you a better chance to stop the engine before bent valves if something fails completely?

He is a video of what is going on. It is kind of hard to get the light in there but hopefully it gives you guys an idea about how much it is moving. The other side is perfect.

Just a bump for this thread, I know the video is not great but I thought someone would have a guess on what is going on. Is that a lot of movement or somewhat normal? It will be another 3 or 4 days before I get the covers off.

One time I look and it seems ok, next, seems a little abnormal.
Almost looks like the gear is bent. Slightly
Not sure what's going on.
No matter what, its fixable.

I might be having the same issues right now, so out of curiosity.. Did you ever find out what the issue was?
I have tracked it down to the cam gear, which for me seemed to be slightly skew or at least not tracking completely straight. The problem is, that the gear is brand new! I have pulled the gear and had it checked... it is off by approx. 1/10 of a mm ... but the same goes for both the used gears that I pulled.
Hope you found a got answer
