No you don't need a cage and you would not want a CAGE in a street car anyway...done right they would require the whole interior to be removed and much of it cut to pieces. You could add an old Devek Roll Bar/mini cage but you don't need to do that either...

You do need a way to attach the shoulder harnesses to the car though... I have used Harness hooks in most all my street cars... I think those came from Devek too. BTW, using harnesses on the street is NOT FUN or a good idea. Save them for track work only, use the regular seat belts on the street. There are also things called "harness bars" but I am not sure they make them for 928's...

I used Devek harness adaptors mounted to the rear shock tower, and Brey Krauss harness hooks for the lap belt, they mount to the stock seat-belt holes. I think it was the Brey Krauss hooks for the Boxster that worked. Eye bolt and big-*** washers for the sub belt. You will need the long shoulder straps to reach the adaptors at the shock tower.

nope..you can get by with a bolt in 1/2 cage....just like the devek roll bar if you can find one...or get the adapters like Rich...I think Carl sells a kit

Hi

I have a 5/6 point harness in my daily driver ...with a Momo race seat...and no roll cage.

I got a set of the rear/top/shock mounts from Carl (and they are brilliant by the way) the side mounts I use the standard seat belt mounts and the centre mount is drilled through the floor with a massive spreader plater for the load...

The trick is that the Race seat has to have the slots both above your shoulders for the rear harnesses and the hole in the base for the fifth belt.

I did try it with the standard seat for a couple of weeks but its certainly not ideal as the shoulder harnesses slip down both sides...

When i use it daily I do not bother with the fifth belt (tucked under race seat) but I use all 4 of the others and it only takes a couple of seconds to do up.... its also the law here in the UK that you have to wear seat belts all the time...

All the best Brett

Depends. (tm)

A proper 5pt harness has the sub belt coming THRU the seat where it needs to attach, its not safe per SFI to wrap forward around the lip of the seat, and then back to the mount. If you cant do this, then the install point for this must have the belt coming up to the seat straight from the mount point, never at an angle. Sub belts should also have a plate under the car to help secure them..not just sheet metal.

Also, the shoulder belts must be NO lower than a 90d angle from your spine..this prevents spinal injuries in a crash..there is _some_ leeway given to the street installs, but it's becoming increasingly frowned upon. Short = safe, and the current knowledge is that a set of shoulder belts that spread out behind you..to go around the seat, is also a huge problem as well.

You also wanna shy away from LONG shoulder straps to the back of the car. The belts -will- stretch 20-25% depending on the vendor when you put em to use..and on a loooong strap, that all but makes them useless when you need them...not including the stretch YOU will have. You could easily still eat a wheel or windscreen with a lot of stretch. Short = safe.

Lap belts should be..IIRC, about 2.5-3" (therebouts) forward of the point where the seat bottom and seat back planes meet each other. (Dale Jr failure IIRC)

These are just the SFI requirements for safety.

If you wanna carry that another step, replace them every 24mo. The sun is hell on the fabric, and can be reduced to less than 20% of original strength at two years of exposure...and about 50% in one year. A race car inspection would require this, but not so much the street cars with em, unless they are clearly visibly aged/abused.

Whatever belts you buy, Check for SFI-16.1 (I think thats the latest spec) and/or FIA ratings. Non rated belts may NOT be worse off, but their design and materials have not been inspected and certified.

And IMHO, Id never do it W/O a full cage...hard to lean (or be leaned) over in a roll..you're gonna be stuck sitting up, like it or not in belts.

PS: Im not a Debbie Downer on race car parts in non race cars, but I work a safety crew for racing..and ive seen what happens when it goes bad...and most of the time it was only $40 worth of prevention & RTFM that would have made it right.
