Hi,
I'm in the Seattle area and have been lurking here for several months and am now in the market for a well - or nearly well - sorted 928 for driving on the kind of days we don't tell the rest of the country about, and hoping for some help/advice/recommendations from Rennlisters.
A little background; I have never owned nor driven a 928, but the memory of a 1958 356A, the appeal of a front-engined, watercooled V8 and the appreciation for the breadth of online support and development of the serious use and preservation of these cars has me intrigued. My avatar is the wooden boat that found me as its curator through the last 20 of its now 70 year life and hopefully represents the kind of spirit that the best of 928 ownership seems to entail, at least as exemplified by this forum. In any event, I've joined the OC and Rennlist to support that notion.
My budget is <10K, up to 150K miles, 87 or newer; prefer blue or green; adverse to white/Linen interiors; don't necessarily care about major engine performance modifications, but yes on upgraded items like tensioner, TT bearings and clamp, shocks, suspension, intake. I think automatic but would consider 5-speed.
Not afraid of TB or other maintenance and repair items if the price accommodates them and expect to do them myself with the help of the great resources of this forum. Definitely do not want to chase out many body/trim/interior deficiencies. Not afraid of electrical issues (should be, tho; I'm an electrical engineer...)
With the ones I've looked into, the one that seems to have the best price, condition, and color combination (but not mileage), is completely across the country. It been over 5 yrs since the TB change but not 30K, so it doesn't seem wise to drive it back. There is one locally that is exactly the opposite.
I haven't seen any of them in person but will at a minimum have a PPI done.
If someone on the list has a car that might fill the bill, or if you hear of one, please let me know.

Bill, Welcome!! I saw your query on the PacNW list also, you've come to the right places.
I think, after twenty years of being caretaker to a wooden boat, that you will find 928 ownership very straightforward. The technology is completely different of course, but the obsessive/compulsive approach to problem solving and absence of any sort of mental balance that goes along with wooden boat ownership will certainly serve you in good stead.
We're just up the road, figuratively speaking, you are welcome any time to go for a drive, talk about cars, whatever we can do to help. I'll PM our contact details.
And Good Hunting!

Thanks all for all the kind words.
SanDiego928 - You move fast, at least off the road! I'm guessing on it as well...
Jim,
Thanks for the kind offer; I'll take you up on it.
In the boat world, they say the two happiest days are the day you buy it and the day --- well you get the idea, I'm sure it can be the same in sharkland. Jim's observation about mental unbalance doesn't seem to align with James' advice.
