I replaced my stock 7'' headlights with a used pair of H-5's. I got a good price on them and did not want to spend the money on H-4's.
The H-4's are a brighter light and will plug in directly to the pre- '85 wiring harnes.
To convert the earlier modles to H-5's you will need to replace the connection at the wiring harness to the headlight.
I used Big Daves write up http://members.rennlist.com/bigdave/index.html on replacing them and everything went very smoothly.

H4's are not really any brighter than H5's. The difference is the beam pattern. The H5's scatter the light everywhere, the H4's are a "Z" beam pattern. I'm running 80/100w bulbs in my H4's and never get flashed. When I had the same wattage bulbs in my H5's EVERYONE flashed me to dim my lights. Once you go to H4's you'll never go back.

I got a replacement from this guy on ebay about a year ago. the lenses and reflector is in good shape though you can tell the ligh is aged as the epoxy that bonds the lens on has yellowed slightly or maybe the older ones used a different epoxy during assembly. he has them as listed for a BMW 733i though that is incorrect. I gave hime the bosch part number for the 8" to verify they where correct before ordering.

The 928 was designed to use the flat 8 inch H-4 lights made especially for it and did so in markets other than the USA. Here the regulations REQUIRED sealed beam headlights (no removable bulb) so they fitted a standard 7 inch high low sealed beam like used on a 1957 Chevy or any other single headlight car. To fill in the gap they added the silly PLASTIC chromed tim ring......the only chrome on a 928 (except the door locks in 78 ) . I figure the Germans thought if they are that stupid they deserve the chrome.....and the 85 MPH speedo in 1980 !

I recently un-federalized my ’78. I installed 8” H4’s and euro fog/driving light assemblies. I used Narva +50 bulbs in both the headlights and driving lights. These bulbs are brighter than normal 55W bulbs, but have the same power rating (the tradeoff is a shorter lifespan). The difference in lighting between the H4 setup and the sealed beam setup is dramatic. Low beams are the best I have used, and the high beams seem to be as powerful as one would ever need. Aside from function, the front of the car now looks so much better than with the sealed beams. All in all, this was the best modification I have made to my car. Even though it was rather pricey, I’m glad I did it!
In my research, I came across this site, written by an automotive lighting engineer. http://www.danielsternlighting.com/home.html
Read everything on his site, and you will be amazed at how little you knew about auto lighting. He sells lamps and bulbs (including ones hard to get in the US) and has instructions on how to aim all types of auto lights. I especially appreciated his discussion about blue-tinted bulbs such as Sylvania Silverstars. In short, these premium-priced bulbs are a marketing gimmick; performance wise, they suck, and are basically a waste of money (unless you are after the “white” light look). He also discusses why HID conversions are usually a bad idea.
