Question Stock Headlamp

1981 928.

I noticed other 928's have a flat all glass headlamp. Mine has the metal ring around it and is curved (convex) glass. So, I like the flat glass. Which one is stock and where can I get the flat ones and about how much would I spend? Any problems replacing with the flat ones?

Thanks. Mark

The H4 & H5 8" headlights were used on the 87 to 95 cars but can be fitted to earlier cars.
Not a cheap upgrade at $300+ each. H4's are better and they are slightly cheaper than the H5's.
Try Mark at 928 International for some used ones.

Wow, thanks. 300+ a piece, holy smokes. I was wondering what year they were from. Perhaps they used 24k GOLD for conductivity and to balance them..ha ha...

A much chepaer solution is to put 7" H4 units into your car.
$52 each is a lot easier on the wallet.

But he still has the same look with the trim ring.

You can get good used set of 8" H5 for around 100 bucks.

H4's are the best solution. 8" H4's are great.

I'd prefer 7" H4's to 8" H5's because I prefer to see better at night.

I've sometimes wondered about painting the rings body color.

"painting the rings body color/"
I thought about that on my 86, maybe give it a try - the chrome rings look out of place, anyway.

Not trying to hijack, but where does one get the 7" H-4's?

Yes me too. Mine have been changed to 8" flats from the stock 7" with rings before I got it 4 yrs ago. Both lights work but one lense has a crack in it. Tried everywhere to find a replacement (inc the US). Have been told to get new lights but am looking at $600 installed.

Not the same look. The lense will be flat but yes, the ring will remain. However with the 7" H4s, you will get twice the brightness of the old, sealed beam unit. I have a Bosch kit on mine, it was a direct fit and they are excellent. When they were available, the cost was $100 for the kit (2 lenses, bulbs, weather stripping and instruction).

I replaced my stock 7'' headlights with a used pair of H-5's. I got a good price on them and did not want to spend the money on H-4's.
The H-4's are a brighter light and will plug in directly to the pre- '86 wiring harnes.

To convert the earlier modles to H-5's you will need to replace the connection at the wiring harness to the headlight.

I used Big Daves write up http://members.rennlist.com/bigdave/index.html on replacing them and everything went very smoothly.
