I didn't imagine it was so hard to install it. I havent received it yet. The instructions I have are those:

ftp://928m:928m@12.234.229.133/insta...CupInstall.pdf

...and I have the engine and torque tube in the car as you can see here:

...so I will see how I can tighten it up (with help from inside the car).

Hello Landseer....I wonder if you can help me.....my car hasn't got the LSD but I have now found a used gearbox with LSD (my old gearbox is kaput, it's a long story).

1. Can I just plug and play the LSD gearbox into my non-LSD car?

2. You mentioned "LSD units are modular and can be swapped in and out." Can I just then remove the LSD parts in the gearbox if I do not wish to have the LSD fitted to my car?

Thanks a million!

Yes and yes.

No idea why you wouldn't want it in, but it's not too hard to take it out.

Depends on the year of the car and the year of the transaxle if it is plug and play. Same with the slip there are two dimensionally different units.

Thank you Joe. Not that I do not want the LSD but rather I'm thinking it could be dangerous for me should the LSD-gearbox does not work well with my non-LSD-transaxle? Perhaps the rear tyres would unnecessarily lock or give way at certain speeds when cornering.

Thank you James..

My car is an 81. The LSD-gearbox is an 82. Do you think they can work with each other?

Not sure what you are worried about. It's a clutched unit. It slips some when needed, but puts torque to both wheels no matter what. It can't lock up.

As noted, there were different units. If you are doing a direct swap (same year & model of trans) they should bolt right up.

Different years may be a different story.

Sorry about the thread revival. Trying to confirm if my 1978 5 speed is LSD equipped, using the stamped numbers....otherwise I'll borescope at fill plug.

Stamped : G28/03 118 2796

Still worth borescoping through the fill hole, but there's no " /12 " after the G28.03, so it should not have LSD if it's all original.

No.
And unless you drive the car in snow/ice, you will never know the difference if it does or does not.
The only exception for the above statement is that at the very limits of the car, when it was very fresh and not very old, a limited slip increased understeer. (Which Porsche dealt with by using a smaller front sway bar than on the later models.)

Thanks Greg and Rob,

Doing a drain and fill soon, I'll borescope anyways.

Thanks again!

Finally got around to rear diff drain and fill since it was a balmy -5C.....Successfully removed all drain and fill plugs (thank-you impact wrench), front plug was only plug with magnet. Video of borescope confirms non-LSD diff.

I find the LSD in mine very useful on damp roads, especially at intersections where trucks or buses have paused and dropped oil......
