Default Empty cam journal oil block off pins-what year?

What year did they switch from the rubber seals to the solid block-off pins for the oil holes in the rear cam journals? I am chasing a rattle/knock on the driver side that is intermittent in that it will knock for a few seconds, then seems to skip a few seconds then knock again then stop for maybe 10-15 seconds then return. It seems worse when cold but never completely goes away. When up to temp my oil pressure at idle is nearly dead on 2 bar and rises to 5 bar by about 2000 rpm. the noise seems to disappear as rpm's increase. I was using a mechanics stethoscope today to listen to various areas from above and could get very clear signature from the PS/Alt cassette but not from the DS cam cover. Using the steth on the A/C bracket the knock is totally absent. I also get some lifter rattle on the DS under hard acceleration making me think that if I have the old style rubber seals they may have come loose, allowing oil pressure on the DS valve train to drop.

Thoughts?

Mike

Pretty sure that they were changed with the GTS models. Yours will, without a doubt, be rubber originally.

Thanks Greg. I thought that '93 was the first year but based on previous posts I wasn't sure. Guess I'll go ahead and make the upgrade as it appears pretty simple once you get the cam covers off.

Mike:

My covers are off as well, I'll start searching, but do you have a link(s) to discussions on this and how to upgrade it?

Here is a thread with some pics showing the old plugs and the new pins installed LINK. As far as a procedure goes just unbolt the rear most cam bearing cap once the cam cover is off. Remove the old style pins and insert the new pins. IIRC the new pins are a slight friction fit so they may have to be tapped in to place. The new pins are held in by the bearing cap. Wipe off the mating surfaces on the head and bearing cap and apply some fresh Loctite 574 to both and install the cap. Might be good to put a thin film of Hondabond or other sealant on the OD of the cam bearing cap end covers to ensure no leaks. the WSM and the PET are not clear to me on how these caps seal as there is no o-ring or gasket used on the S4's. Someone who has already done the job will chime in here and set us both on the right path.

This is now on my list, 928sRus is on the job getting me parts.

Thanks for bringing this up..my plugs -are- all in right now, but..its something else to clean/powdercoat, and re-plate too.

I spose I should replace the cam end caps??

Also:

Anyone know of a 'chain' store that will have Hondabond and/or Loctite 574?

I have a full day of driving tomorrow to platers, powder coaters, UPS center...and my WWW coder for my store...all up and down and around the greater SF Bay area. So might as well add that in as well

Have Rog send the 574 with your order, he gets it for me when I need it.

Pins, 574, cam end caps and other parts in your next care package.

Well I got the block off pins changed on the DS today. Both the original rubber encased ones were still in place and in one piece. I pulled one of the pins out of the rubber to compare the length to the new pins and the old ones are shorter by about 1/8". I don't know if it will make any difference but it is one more thing checked off the list. I did notice there are a couple of cam lobes with a pit or two. Looks like someone may have run too light an oil or one with not enough zinc sometime past. I am going to get it up on stands tomorrow and poke around underneath to see if I can discover the source of my knock/rattle. Will prolly pull the bell housing cover and check the flex plate and coupler while I am at it. Wish me luck.
