(a subtle comment indicating that 5W-20 is waaaay too light for our engines)

Oil change time. Just got some Mobil 1 15W-50 at O'Reilly's for $5.49/quart, similar in price to Walmart. I think the sale is going on until the 24th of Feb. The store I went to only had 19 quarts, and now they only have 9 left

In the Huntsville/Madison Alabama area, the Walmart stores usually carry Mobil 1 0W40 in the 1QT containters for a reasonable price. Only caveat is there might not be nine of them sitting on the shelf at any given store at one time. To keep that from being a problem, I keep a good stock of it at home and pick up replacement stock as needed whenever I happen to be in there for other reasons. I'm not the biggest Walmart fan due to the checkout lines, but I still find myself in there at least once every couple of months or so. Just wish they'd start carrying it in the 5QT size like they do for most of their other Mobil 1 oils.

Having said that, I haven't seen the 15W50 at Walmart so if that is what you're running, then this sale might be a great time to stock up as the local auto stores do tend to run $8 or $9 a quart. But, then again, that's assuming you can find 15W50 at an O'Riellys around here as I seem to remember looking everywhere locally for it before settling on the 0W40.

M1 15W50 was on the shelves at our Portland, OR Walmart again.

$27/5 IIRC.

Just picked up NAPA brand (made by Valvoline) 15W50 full synthetic for $3.49 a quart. Bought 'em out! Thats as good if not better than most petroleum oil prices.

Porsche recommends we change the oil / filter every 15,000 miles or seasonally (every Spring). I change my oil every 7 - 8K miles and it still looks great so I figure ANY synthetic 15W50 that meets ASE standards cant be all bad Anybody experience anything to the contrary??

Have I missed some sort of economic upheaval in oil prices? Went to Pep Boys today to get 5W-30 for the MIL's Corolla (which has a bit of a drinking problem..). Cheapo off-brand oils were $5.49/qt, name brand dinos were $6.99 and Mobil 1/synths were $9.19-ish. Maybe this is just a Kalifornia thing?

Sadly "synthetic" oil no longer needs to be synthetic. It can and is made from petroleum hence the lower prices compared to the few real synthetic oils still being sold. Mobile One used to be synthetic used to also have zinc used to be reasonably good.

I did notice NAPA 15W-50 synthetic oil for that price... any specification links on ZDDP content for it? Just because it meets ASE standards doesn't mean it won't be bad for a 928 engine due to not enough zinc content. In fact, the newer the standard, the lower the zinc content.

I'm interested in that NAPA synthetic as well.

I thought more zinc was better?

I get Brad Penn 20W50 for $5/qt anytime... plenty of ZDDP and no need to wait for a sale.

Nope... I'm looking at a quart as I type. Just says "Meets or Exceeds API SERVICE SM/SL and all preceeding API Gasoline Catagories" On the stamp "API SERVICE SM / SAE 15W50"

Manufactured for NAPA Dist. by Ashland Inc. Part # 75-510

Hadnt thought about the zinc content... Anybody know the answer to the ZDDP question?

Are there ZDDP additives?
