Default Won't start in Park

Car has bee sitting for winter lay up and I had trouble when I put it away that in Park it would not turn over but would in neutral. I am sure this is a switch but don't know the name of it. Is there a write up on replacement and who would have it?

Thanks Cliff

The safety switch is located on the auto box and it is adjustable, that is it can be moved around the gear change shaft axis. This switch is designed to allow starting only in N & P.

It sounds that the switch has moved and requires to be centralised. This is fully described in the WSMs and requires a 3mm diameter shaft IIRC ( the shaft end of a 3mm drill is perfect for the job). IIRC there is three nuts that need to be loosened to allow the switch to be rotated until the 3mm shaft can be inserted through the switch body and located into the 3mm hole in the gear box housing.

The change lever located on this shaft may have to be loosened and the "T" gear change lever may need to be reset as well, so they both match up for the alignment of the "T" handle to the indent positions for each gear within the box .

The switch is a Mercedes Benz switch and the MB part number is on the side of the switch (The switch if it requires renewal will possibly be cheaper through a MB dealer spare parts department). You have to ensure that the adjustment is done correctly because it is easy to fracture the plastic lever within the switch. Ask me how I know, BTDT.

Cliff,

I would recommend that you buy the set of Jim Moorehouse's Technical CDs as they include the WSMs and many other booklets and technical information, including an instruction booklet on the Auto Box.

They are available from Jim direct (he is a member of this forum) or from Roger at www.928srus.com at a very reasonable price. This will be the best investment you will make as a 928 owner and it will save you a fortune by becoming a DIYer.

Keep us informed on how you go.
