Default New Year's Day Drive-San Diego

By semi-popular demand, I think we can get a few cars together again this year-we had a great group last year. We'll start similar to last year. We can head up South Grade to the top of Palomar, then down East Grade to the vista point for photo op. Then down to the bottom. Folks that need to be home early can head West on 76 to I-15 and home. Or, we can head up Mesa Grande for another fun leg. Then, to Julian for breakfast or back west via Highland Valley or 78 or 67 or ??

We have some phenominal roads down here, so it's on for those who want to experience our area. Short, medium or long, I think we can satisfy any driver's yearning to start the new year!

We're meeting in the parking lot of the On The Border Restaurant in the mall parking lot (NE corner of I-15 and Via Rancho/Bear Valley Pkwy) on Jan 1 for a DEPARTURE at 7:30am. We'll be headed up Palomar Mountain and then Mesa Grande (stage 2) down through San Ysabel and Ramona back to Escondido. You should be on your way home between 10 and 11. If you just want to run Palomar, you can scoot down the 76 to the 15 when done there.

Here is the location of the meeting spot:

Many are actually. But I think leeroy may be ready for another run. I am usually in bed by 10pm on New Years eve, so an early call is no issue.

Washed the car, put the big tires back on, fixed the stereo (1.5 years without tunes, 10 minute fix. I'm an idiot), and filled the tank. See you all in the AM.

With the house behind us that decided to blare the music at 4:08am, and my subsequent neighborhood walk at 5:00am to tell them to shut the hell up, I did not feel up to the task of the drive this morning. Its too bad as I would have liked to see the show this morning. I hope everyone had fun.

Ugh. Sorry, Brendan, you missed a nice ride. I think I found a good candidate for an SF11 fun run, though it's a long way from Anaheim. The run up Palomar was a great, if a little dusty (front of the car now has a lot of measles. Oh well...) But the run thru Mesa Grande, holy cow, I'm in love.

Thanks for organizing Ed, I had a great time!

Nice early start at Camp Pendleton:

Starting lineup (The Exige S discovered he had ~1.5mm of brake pad and decided to bow out.)

Overlooking Lake Henshaw

More lineup:

Looks awesome. My secret plan was to park my car for the ride and go with you if you brought the stroker. Looks like it was a great ride.

Man I need to move south so that I can get in on some of these runs.

I was checking out the real estate yesterday in San Diego for an escape from the winter.

Anything in your area like a Tax sale for around $200,000?

Thumbs up

Hey Ed, I was better late than never... my dog didn't throw up even once, and I still have the same amount of paint on my car as when I started, so I had fun! Couple of jollies entering some of those wet muddy/sandy corners up & down... BTW, your 993 looks beautifully planted from the rear... my first outing in anger since the second round of suspension mods last week - have to see if Jae can coax out those very small squirrels now...

And Brad, yes there are modest properties around for that or less even without being tax sales, my buddy just got into one... took him a while to get that deal though, but they are here...

Cool seeing the Miata guys going up as we were leaving... traded waves & smiles... are these an honest & fun handling sports car that most P-car folks like, or what - or is it just me? I had a Boxster S as well as the Carrera a while... my ex has that now... maybe this is why I wonder if the Miata wouldn't have been a better choice... especially back then

And a wonderful New Year to all, I'm sorry I didn't get to mingle and chat with more of you... I think Captain Kemo schmoozed a bit on my behalf though... he even greeted the Volvo guy I'd passed on my way catching up with y'all...

It was fun indeed! I loaded some pics and a video link of the ride up in the 993 section:

Barry-she feels good, but it is definitely a different drive than the 911. Power steering, a way different shifting linkage and powerband take getting used to!

Rob-It was great to meet you, your 928 is stellar!

Man, that is some kind of GORGEOUS landscape there guys! You are a lucky bunch I'd say for sure! That is why it costs a large fortune to live in that neck of the woods I guess! Just beautiful!

You too, Ed! The south grade was a blast, I just stuck it in 3rd and rolled up the hill. I ended up staying with the group up over Mesa Grande, which was truly outstanding, what a great 12 miles of road. Looking forward to the next one!

South Grade, 2600 ft vertical rise:

Hi, James. yes, we have to trade house sq ft for storage space, trying to convince my wife now i need to add another - 83 - 5 speed, just because :-)

Also tried out my new gtech - 0-60 in 6.1 on the black 86 <--- see left ---, but i was real slow on the start button. - Or just kidding myself!
