Anyone have any thoughts on why the driver side cylinder bank is numbered 5-8 from front to back, but has number stamps of 8-5 from front to back on the cam sealing surface above each cylinder? Seems like an odd way to do things.

I think the numbers you are seeing are the ones that correspond to the camshaft bearing cap numbers to ensure the camshaft bearing caps are installed in their correct positions. The caps and cylinder head are machined together as a set to create the camshaft bearing surfaces. Therefore it is critical that the correct cap be installed in the correct position. Each cam bearing cap should have the position number followed by a match number. The match number is stamped into the side of the cylinder head between two of the exhaust ports. This ensures you know which caps go with what cylinder head and the correct position of each.
