What is it doing that makes you think it is shot? Is it just not pulling? Shortly after I bought my 88, it started doing **** that made me thik it was shot, I changed the fluid and filter and it has been perfect ever since. It will act this way if the fluid is very low...
Best of luck,

My old tranny is for sale in Mississauga (just outside of Toronto). From an '88 S4 and has limited-slip diff.

Not that I am interested in a 928, in any 928 for a matter of fact (disclosure in case wife reads this thread), but what makes you think the transmission is failing? These trannys are very sensitive if the fluid level is not right and the symptoms will lead you believe you need a new tranny (slipping clutch, abrupt shifting etc). Have you checked the fluid level with the engine idling?

It's a spare that I picked up a while back. I was told that it's good, and the fluid seems fine. However, there is no guarantee, so it's not a transmission that I would recommend paying someone else to install. In that case, you're better off buying a rebuilt or one that you could verify 100 percent before it is installed.
