Hi guys I'm new here and I'm looking at buying a 928, I would love a 87 s4 5speed but they might be a little out of my price range, so I found a 86s with the production # over 1000 do all 86.5 have the s4 upgrades? I read into it and just want to make sure I'm thinking correctly before driving 3.5 hours to go look at it. I plan on doing some tweeking and taking it to some track events so I think the s4 is the best way to go for me. Thanks for any help you can give. Telly

Basically brakes are the major upgrade.

Yes, if its an '86 by VIN, and the last 4 digits are over 1000, then its got the S4 brakes/suspension/abs package (ABS rings on the hubs are different for later cars - and you can still buy new sensors, unlike the earlier cars)

the 86 and 86.5 have the same engine....very different from the 87> S-4 engine.

Not much difference in price these days between an 86.5 and an S4. If you are that price sensitive, this may not be your car. It can get very expensive very fast. Buy the best, newest one you can afford, and still figure on at least $2 or $3k in the first year, minimum.

I love the look of the 86. Please call 928 International. When I was looking they told me that there are certain things to look out for in the 86's. Contact them just in case....and best of luck!

thanks guys, I will probably hold out and look for a 87 I like the newer styling a little better and rather get more car for the money, I build mostly protouring type muscle cars and know how much money you can throw at a car to get better parts so I might as well wait and find what I'm looking for. So keep your eyes out I'll even take a project I own a collision/resto shop so I can do about anything. Any good sites for finding cars? Thanks again Telly

There are a couple of good looking cars on ebay right now, which may well suit your needs, with prices that look pretty good (at least from the pics and description). You'll want a ppi by a knowledgable 928 person. Your background will help you to really enjoy this car without feeling overwhelmed.

Salvage '85 in Poughkeepsie NY, $3,300 OBO. Could be the best value out there and sounds like you can deal with making title good. Also Troy MI.

85 - 86.5 cars can get nice upgrades from the early 32V Jedi-master Porken to surpass the S4 performance wise. But if you prefer the S4 styling hold out there isn't a big $$ difference in the initial purchase price anymore.

I am looking at an 86.5. What are differences in engines between it and the S4 engine. It seems there are more performance options with the 86.5. Is that true? What kind of power can you get with Porken's chips and an x-pipe?

'85 and '86 have the organ pipe intake system - some say it provides more low end torque but I do not have any real insight.
I believe there are more options for both intake and exhaust modifications for the S4 engines in part because the '85/'86 was only around 2 years.

According to Ken's site (liftbars.com) You can get into the 300's at the rear wheels for both torque & HP with Porken's chips, an '87 S4 fuel pressure regulator. That would mean around 340-350 HP or more at the crank (Auto); Stock is rated at 288 HP.

For comparison A well cared for S4 (non-mod) puts out around 275 HP at the rear wheels. Rated 316HP at the crank (Auto).
