Strange clunk noise.......
so when i take off from a stop, i get a nice "clunky" sound from the passenger rear area of the car. CV's are rebuilt, with no play, and i cant find any loose nuts or bolts. its almost like a "pop, pop" or "clunk-clunk". anyone else every have an issue kinda like this? im at a loss for words. i have tried pushing the rear down and bouncing the car, with no luck. trans mounts seem ok from what i can tell....

My 86.5 was making a clicking or whirling sound, ended up being the ebrake cable was too slack and was rubbing the back of the hub studs but it was a noise that got faster as the car did.

I have a similar noise in the same place, but I cannot reproduce it with any regularity. I have recently re-booted both axles and the joints are fine. I have checked all the suspension fasteners and they are all torqued correctly. The bushings are a bit old, but nothing wiggly when I go after them with a pry bar and the weight off the suspension. I am hoping it is shock related as I intend to have my rear Bilsteins reconditioned in the spring or summer when I install my new springs. I had my fronts done this fall and both needed new piston rods.

I would check the eccentric bolts for correct torque on the lower control arms to the rear cross member 140 ft/lbs,
and the front lower control arm eccentrics to the chassis these are just tightened with a box wrench as they are hard to get to 84ft/lbs
Also check the rear pinch bolt on the driveshaft ,
stick a wire into the hole in the bottom of the TT and see where the rear driveshaft carrier bearing is.
If the TT was rebuilt then you might have gotten one with a damper in it , if so then this damper could also be sliding back and forth but you probably dont have the damper

Yep .. contrary to what many may think, the rear pinch bolt loosens on all models (not just the front and not just autos) and needs to fitted with a new bolt and torqued periodically.
Here's what happens if if it works it's way forward as a result of a loose/stretched pinch bolt. The shaft works forward and the pinch bolt rides up on to the splines. If it goes too far you can snap the gearbox input shaft.
I think it's worth going over every bolt in the drivetrain and rear suspension and checking all are tight ... you never know it might be several things .. and then you can have confidence that there is less likely to be another 'clunk' soon.

There is another place to look for a rear clunk.
The bolts that hold the links to the front and rear swaybars.
They wear. Might even be torqued tightly. But the bolt wears and/or the holes elongate and allow movement.
Sound anntenuates weirdly on these cars due to structure I guess. I changed the bolt on the front right link, which got rid of my "rear" clunk.
Other place is worn saddle on interior of rack, causing fore/aft movement in the drivers side of the steering, ie, the thing that Captain Earl fixed with the external plastic bushing. Clunk.

so i went and checked the drive shaft pinch bolt, it is tight as can be, no signs of movement. every other bolt and nut is tight. lower arm bushings look old, but not cracked (big ones at any rate) and no signs of movement either. going to check batt as well, but the sound is deff from the pass rear. i re torqued shock mounts and shock nut, shock nut was about 1/4-3/8 turn loose. so we shall see.
thanks a lot for the ideas guys.

I chased a clunking sound and found the lower shock bolt frozen in place. I had to remove the lower suspension and tried to have it pressed out "30-Ton" press. It would not budge ending up burning it off, noise gone!

Well, still no fix... here is a question. so i have the 928MS adjustable droplinks and mount. being that they have the Hemi joints i dont see how they could be "loose" and make a noise. but could they affect the swaybar mounts in some way? so i have tried jumping "not literally" on the back end of the car and nothing, so one thing i did try was leave it in gear and push her back and forth. i did get a slight click sound, maybe from the trans.... or axle. but here is my question, what does it sound like when an axle goes bad? i just re greased and packed them (new boots too).
so one other thing i noticed is that when going down the street in second, if i depress the clutch, then re engage it, it makes the noise in the rear just slightly as the suspension loads.... thats how it makes the noise when i take off from a stop. some times on right hand turns.......

check the lower link pin and see if one of the bevelled washers was left out.
Having someone drive next to you and watch the wheel .
Also check the upper control arm see where it is sitting on the bushings
