Default S3 cams in an S4

Has anyone out there tried putting 85/86/ cams in an S4? THey seem to be a more aggressive grind but look like they wouls require some modification. Anyone done it?
Thanks

Yes, it has been done, they do require some mods.

Why not call Mike Simard and have a set of cams made, his work is like art, he is here in Atlanta.

Never heard of him. Any contact info? Also, I do not want to spend a fortune to make this mod if I do it at all. New cams are generally very expensive when you are talking about b4 of them.
Thanks

He is a member here, well known, and very well respected, do a search or PM me for his numbers, but if you are looking for cheap cams, my guess is you own the wrong car.

Don't know that I like the comment about owning the wrong car as I am a very experienced 928 mechanic and owner but you probably did not mean it the way I took it. I do not consider the 928 to be a very expensive car to own. I have owned 5 of them. I chose them over Ferrari and Lotus for that very reason.
That being said, I can get a single cam made for my Pantera versus it taking 4 of them for my 928. Of course, I can also put and LS-1 in the 928 but I am just trying to figure out the most economical way to get a decent increase in ponies and still keep it Porsche powered.
So, who has actually done this conversion?? Any takers out there?
FYI, I found that guys website and will talk to him next week to see what might work.

Greg's just trying to help you out. Because of the initial purchase price, a lot of people pop up here with questions and unrealistic expectations of what it should cost to both maintain and upgrade their sharks. BTW, there are quite a few threads on this topic that pretty much lay out what is required to use S3 cams in an S4. This topic has been covered many times, so you're probably better off searching rather than asking someone to lay it out again.

I have done a search but came up with nothing. Not sure why but whenever I search the rennlist for something, I usually come up dry. Must be something that I am doing wrong.

I don't think you'll not much or any seat of the pant gains from a set of cams.

Of course now I do a search and come up with a wealth of information on this subject. Go figure. THanks to all for their help so far.

Yea, hopefully you ran into Jim Morton is your search.

Re reasonbly inexpensive ponies, best bang for your buck is an X-pipe (cat delete) @ <$500

Cams are a good choice, but the S3 gains may be marginal per $ spent vs. an optimized custom grind. Either was you're into it for $1200-2500 minimum.

You could consirer 928sRus Enhanced Intake System (EIS) @ <$500, but worthwhile gains may require Sharktuning (do a search) and a combination of aforementioned mods.

Best bang for you buck, hands down, is to get your car running tops.
Working knock and hall sensors will keep away the six degree retards.
Nominal (or tweaked) cam timing is requires the cost of a $150 tool.

I wish I was a experienced 928 mechanic.

Best bang for you buck is always going to be N20, followed by some other small mods.

But yes, I did mean that if you are looking for cheap cams then the 928 is not the car.
I have no idea how you took that, I really do not care how, i was just trying to help you out.

A well done LSx conversion is going to be BIG money, 15-20 grand by the time it is all done correctly from all the reports i have heard of by folks that have done it.

I would not even consider going that route.

Compared to a Ferrari the 928 is a cheaper car to keep running, but it is in no way a inexpensive car to maintain well.
Almost every 928 that I have seen and checked out could use 8-10 grand worth of work right now.

So very, very true.

But its so hard to make money working on neglected cars. So easy to get caught in a dilemma during repair due to ancilliary problems. Risky business with a new meaning.

Just to clarify (and I assume), Greg is referring to the cars that pass thru his mechanic shop. His comment not particularly directed at this enthusiast community.
Although, you give my $8K to spend on my 928s, it would be gone tomorrow.
