Torque converter bolts loose, one fell out. 87S4
One of my first posts on this list was fighting a rattle in the driveline at idle. It turned out to be the rivets that hold the rear flex plate (transmission end of the car)to the splined shaft that clamps to the torque tube.
Fast forward 4 years and 13k miles, and all of my torque converter bolts have backed out and are loose, with one dropping completely out of the converter. What I thought was a bad fuel pump was this converter bolt being chewed up by the torque converter. What led me down that path was that my brand new fuel pressure gauge stopped working at the exact instant the noise occurred. Wonderful. I didn't use loctite at the time but I plan on using some this time around. I'm glad that this is all it was, and I was very lucky that no other damage occurred.
Wanted to thank Sean R for leading me in the right direction. He asked me if it sounded like I was dragging an aluminum ladder under the car when it happened. I said, yep, that's it. The thing is, it wouldn't make this God awful sound all of the time, only when I accelerated. It would then roll the bolt back in to the converter and pick it up slinging it around inside the housing. I just wanted to get this out there, hopefully it will help somebody someday.
