So was it just the caps? What kind of charger and what were the settings? I understand the need to apply more amps for a faster charge on something not in the car, but the trickle chargers limit is 1.5 Amps partly for this reason.
I just bought a load tester and they warn you about heat and never more than 15 seconds, but IIRC no mention of removing caps. That machine is not charging of course.

I admire your skills in concocting an elaborate (and nicely written, BTW ) "exploding battery" story to cover up what was, clearly, just the aftermath of a really wicked sneeze.
Ah... and I see you employ the doctor-recommended "sleeve" method. Good man.

Hell, I'll buy you a shirt to replace that one.
Just don't ever throw that one away.

Let's just not forget the lesson to be learned here, improper proceedure can hurt you and or someone nearby a whole lot! Many years ago a good friend of mine was terribly disfigured by the same exact thing, except he put his face directly over the top of the battery to look inside the cells and wasn't wearing a face shield and had not taken the caps off prior to starting the charger. You are just lucky that you weren't closer or some unsuspecting visitor wasn't near it at the time. It is a great shirt though.

I just read all the replies to this post for the first time. I can't stop laughing!
You guys are great. I am SO glad I am involved with this crowd. Great banter, and great advise in every thread. Occasionally even some philosophy to give pause for introspection.
But to answer some of the questions regarding the charger and charging: The battery was a sealed unit (No caps) for the Beemer motorbike. (A 1974 R90/6 for sale BTW. Has some damage. Details if requested). The vent tube was pinched under the battery so it could not vent. It was also on a fast charging position on the charger (15 amps) by my oversight. My bad. Explosion ensued. (More like a cracked vent tube area which permitted quick squirting out of the liquid contents just like champagne or soda pop.
This shirt will not be discarded. I will wear it while traveling through bad neighborhoods, during the performance of dangerous acts and when not being worn I may us it as a hood bra for the 928 for better impact absorption in the event of a driving mishap. I'll bet it keeps the car from receiving any damage including paint scratching during head-on collisions.
Still waiting to hear from Mr. Tyson here on this thread.

Very funny. But no, I was involved in an accident 4 years ago when someone ran a stop sign and T boned me on the bike. The worst of it is a slight frame bend where the fuel tank meets the seat. It's amazing how little else was affected. I start it up once in awhile when the battery gets an occasional charge.
