If you buy a car like mine, you'll be pretty bored. No engine, tranny, torque tube rebuilds so far and I'm not expecting any soon. The worst that has happened has been a couple of torn up bellypans from road hazards on some of my extended trips and the usual motor mounts and oil pan gasket. Otherwise, just 226K carefree miles as of today. I only spent $16K on mine 10 years ago when it had 72K miles. For $20K you should be able to get a pristine S4 or even a nice GT.

I was about to post a pic of my car, but you beat me to the punch. That's my minerva blue Bleumax....it is a 5 speed, first year example, and I actually enjoy the driving experience more in it than I did with my previous 84 and 86.5. They were auto boxes however. This car feels light nimble and fast. It is a cat delete car too, which helps.
My friend has a 930 RUF conversion, which I got to drive this summer. It is the scariest fastest thing I have ever driven - felt light as a feather, and don't dare let up on the accelerator if you are in a bend. I like the way my car shifts better however - more solid feel with the 928. Indeed, the 928 feels overall more substantial than the 911 and its varients, but not at all sluggish or heavy. I think you'll love having both.
Here's another pic or two of mine:

I do not allow any test drives in that car unless the owner can not come and drive it.

That 928 would look really sweet parked next to my 930 (hint...hint, though I'm sure you don't want to sell I can't fault you for that).
Appreciate all comments thus far. I would like to buy from an enthusiast, and I can be patient and wait for the right opportunity (I do have cash and can move quickly when the right opportunity presents itself). As stated before, I would like to hook up with a few owners in the greater NYC metro area and try to sample a few so as to develop some first hand knowledge of what a 'good 928' feels like.

There's a few guys in NYC that come down to Frenzy (or up to boston, or further down south to SITM) that I hope pipe in here! There's a good sized Northern VA/MD/DC contingent, too. I think there was a Jersey meet a couple months back, too.

nice 930, '78?
'86.5 is the car for you, early body style, S4 suspension/brakes, early 32v gives nice jump in hp
84-86 euro will give you 300+ hp with the early body style as well
the later the year it gets harder to find 5 spds
Bottom line is the wife thinks it too loud and rides rough. I want the 928 to be the "civilized" porsche in my collection. I also want to keep it stock...I want to avoid the slippery slope of mods. BTDT with the 930.
I'm thinking up to 20k is palatable for me, but at that price I want to be able to just put gas into it for a while (reasonable expectation?)..

I will add to what others have already said...that is a totally awesome car you have there. I get a lot of favorable comments on the color of my 930 too. The Minerva Blue is really striking.

Rixter, the 930 is a '79.
While I'd feel ok spending up to 20k, I'd consider myself ahead if I could get in for less (so long as I have a good car that isn't an immediate project).
