How do you know by looking at them they are for an '89? (Why would you need '89 for your '87?)

When I installed wires in my '87, I had an extra set of coil wires with different plugs. I assumed these for the 16V coil(s).

I have a line on some 89 coils the ends at the coil are different than 87, but the same at the distributor.

Both sets of new spark plug wires I bought came with 2 sets of coil wires so have 2 pairs of coil wires extra and the 2 sets of used coil wires........shipping may be a hassel.

IIRC Roger had a sale on new sets of Beru wires.

Shipping to and from Canada is PIA. I just shipped some CPR manikins to Montana near the border. for 128.00 to Canada they would have been 400.00 plus. Thanks for the offer
I'll check with Roger.

I would call 928 Specialists, 928 Int'l, or 928's-R-Us. Any one of them can help you out.

BTW, if the coil wire is going bad, there's a good chance the other wires are not far behind. Yes, $400 for a set of wires is steep, but remember these cars cost upwards of $125k in today's dollars. Parts reflect that price.

I bet those coil wires I have are for the '89>

Do you know why the '89 coil are different? Are the compatible?

May not be a huge deal, but consider trying to use the parts that came with your car. And if it just doesn't make sense to do so... do well documenting the change so your not "one of those PO's that hacked up the car". You know the guys I'm talking about right?

Could you imagine standing there scratchin' your head trying to figure out why the coil p/n's don't match?

'87-'88 (and maybe before that) look like the following photo, with the electric contacts for the coil side (the bottom connectors in the photo) different than all the contacts (both the coil wires and spark plug plug wires) on the distributor end.

For '89 and up, both ends look like the upper connectors in the above photo; all the electric contacts at the distributor and coil ends of the wires are the same.

In PET for '87-'91, look at "Main Group 9: Electrical equipment" / "901: electrical equipment engine". You'll see that a whole bunch of stuff related to the ignition coils (the coil itself and the ignition coil wires) changed in '89. If you get the ignition coil wires from Porsche, for example, it's part number 928.602.039.00 for '87-'88, but changes to 928.602.040.01 (left) and 928.602.040.00 (right) for '89-'91. In PET for '92-'95, you'll see that the ignition coil wires stay the same as they were in '89-'91.

wow.............thx Ed..............on 2nd look PET does list the same part numbers but looking over a column or 2 then advises applicable years then the part number starts to change further down the page.

Porsche were evolving many components of the 928 throughout its model years......after 9 years of ownership and 6400 posts still much to learn

I went through this stuff myself a few weeks ago. IIRC, there was some conflicting information in some of the information I came across at the time (maybe even in older versions of PET?) It became clear, though, that '89 was when a bunch of stuff changed related to the ignition coils and connectors for that end.

Also... even though there are different parts listed for left and right side for '89 up, I think that must have been something really minor, like slightly different lengths. I think the coil wires I've gotten (Nology wires many years ago, and more recently, some nice wires from 928 Motorsports) for my '90 have had identical coil wires for the left and right sides and they fit just fine.

We think so, but I'm not 100 percent as we put a spare 944 coil on the drivers side with the arcing coil wire before it sounded like it was using all eight cylinders. It was missing some at low RPMs and had 1500 2000 idle (That sticky throttle you fixed maybe back) . With the deal on the 89 coils , I will just need the wires and those 89 ends and replace both the coils. I would put the others in the boot for the next BRP run in case we need one

I've found a pair of new beru coil wires with ends removed, so they have threaded crimps.

Also have saved a bunch of the distributor - side ends.

Also have one complete wire with correct ends for early 32V that I made-up. Used wire from the 944 with a 928 distributor end applied, but seems fairly flexible. Just stuff for a patch job.

So, Jim will check his stockpile...

944 and 928 32V shared coils for a while. We confirmed part numbers.

928 EuroS and 944 shared distributor caps, I've learned.
928 EuroS and 928 32V shared ignition amps/triggers. We confirmed that. Chewey parts are firing Charles car. And vice versa.
