Those early vents don't even show in PET.

From what I can tell, it was early to mid-year '78 shift to the more reconizable vents.
I've seen them in person before on a '78 ROW so it's not just a preproduction thing.

Mine had been changed out, but I know it had them from early interior photos.

Thanks Black28!

I really like those early center vents too. When I think about building a really early example, those are one of the first things that come to mind.

The **** closes the vents, like the up/down bar in your S4. I believe it is built into the piece the vents are mounted in. By going back to that older style in your picture, you may loose the ability to close those vents off. Or if you only replace the actual vents inside the mount you could keep the ****. (i think)

^^That explains the problem with my how my shift boot fits. I always thought some one had replaced my console base with one from an auto, then cut it out wide enough to fit the plastic and boot for a 5spd into it. But I think now I started out with a narrow one, and someone just cut it out to fit a replacement 5spd boot.

Jim,
I wonder if any VWs, BMWs, etc had that same vent in them in the late 70's?

My '78 US 928 # 342 has the narrow center vents and doesnot have the vent ****--vacuum actuated is at times balky. I sometimes have to go to defrost and then back to AC to get center vents to open.

USA and ROW PET show pretty much the same stuff, don't they.
The "plate" with **** is thru 79.
The other two plates without **** are subsequent MY's, with and without leatherette (don't ask me which is which)

So what is that one Jim has in there now?
