I've seen USA engines with bent valves. You get some carbon in there and the entire "interference" thing changes. I'd not want the belt to break on my Euro S engine....regardless of the compression ratio.

I've seen multiple broken timing belts on 944 Turbo's with & without bent valves (mostly without) and my 944S with a 10.9"1 CR is definitely an interference motor, yet when my cam chain broke both cams were destroyed, no bent valves.
