Rear Quarter Replacement
Looking at replacing the rear quarters in my 86.5 928. Leather was original material. Anyone have any feedback as to if the vinyl looks good in comparison to the leather. Pretty drastic price difference. Also, have seen them for $250(vinyl) and $400(leather) on Jager and 928 leather shop. Anyone purchased before and could tell me which is better or if anyone has a preference. Is it a pretty easy DIY project? THANKS ahead of time.

What color is your interior? I just replaced the cork vinyl QPs in my 78, they look pretty good. I will have them at 3rd Coast this weekend if you would like to see them.

I've had leather and vinyl rear quarters in the 6 928's I've owned over the past 12 years. 5 of the 6 were black. In my opinion, IF the car is going to spend any significant time in the sun over it's lifetime, the vinyl is a much better option. The leather looks nice, but the sun/heat exposure WILL cause it to shrink, warping the panels. (Perhaps constant monthly attention with leather softener treatment will avoid it, but is it worth the trouble for anything other than a show car???).
Just my opinion.

I bought the leather RQP for my car, if you haven't done leather work before don't even bother attempting this. They are ackward as heck to work with because of the size and shape and you can really see an imperfections if you don't do it right. I tried one for mine and then just took it down to an automotive apolstery place.

Yea, mine are warped pretty badly too. I'm just in the planning stage but my idea is to buy from YourAutoTrim.com. Got the 1/8" structured foam from him (super cheap) and some small pieces jsut to practice with. I also bought several of his sample cards looking for the colors I need. The Symphony/Vintage card has two very close matches and I like the thin stretchiness of the vinal too. On color - I was going away from the "very brown" but slowly coming to my senses and downsizing this part of the project - to avoid embarrassment.
There's also a thread here from about 3 months ago of someone who straightened a warped QP - I have to re-read that to know how, but it looked do-able. I guess we'll see - I sense that familiar glow of confidence that I have just before I get edumacated.
PS...Be sure to let us know how it goes, the best payoff is learning from someone else's mistakes and I'm thinking maybe you guys owe me....;] bruce

My leather quarters are warped to hell but on my brother's '83, the vinyl is still intact. If you are going with leather, tint the windows.

Thanks for all replies. I was leaning toward vinyl.
TLSMITH, unfortunately I will not be able to attend. CAn you tell the difference between leather and the vinyl if you have both in the car?
Anyone in the Dallas area know anyone good with interiors that is not outrageous for the price?

I just had Paul Champagne repair and recover my rear quarter panels on the Zyclamrot car. After using steam to get them back into shape he applied two coats of CPES (Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer) before recovering them in leather. I also deleted the far back speakers as they are not well positioned for sound.

Here is a link to a good general description of what CPES is and how it works.....
