Did my check of the flexplate this weekend. Put the PKlamp on in January of this year (2010). Loosened the bolts on factory clamp and PKlamp. No movement at all. Had a sharpie mark on the splines and it was right when I marked it in January.
So that is about 17,000 miles I have driven and it hasn't moved at all. Flex plate was flat before and after retensioning of the bolts.
Keep in mind Sean. I drive like an old Grandma since my WOT switch doesn't work, what's the point of flooring it? I bet my PSD light doesn't come on once per month. Still I can't figure out why my rear tires wore exactly evenly away on both sides in only 16,000 miles when they were rated for 45,000. . ...Oh well, pitched them anyway.
+1 on the PKlamp.
Just checked mine last week and did not move at all since oct. 09.
Did not drive it mutch but in the past years I would get about 2 mm. every year.
what ever you do....do something.. I was helping a local PacNW friend this past weekend with a motor mount, pan gasket etc job on his 928. Got everything out of the way and just took a quick peek to see how the thrust bearing looked. I just looked at the front part of the thrust bearing and it looked fine...so gave it no thought.
later that night, another friend who also helped was cleaning the oil out of the pan and noticed some "metal pieces". Climbed under the car and looked at the rear part of the thrust bearing...and it was "NO MORE". Gone....huge gap. (When the owner first got the car, the flex plate was released)...so we think he got lucky and wore the bearing right to the edge of the block...no wear on the block that could be seen.
The motor of course now has to come out for a full teardown....but like I said..
do something..check that flexplate....and use a porken lock or constantine clamp to keep it from happening..
