Wow, thanks for all the good info guys! I didn't have time to stop by the car today (it's not where I'm currently living at the moment) but tomorrow should be good. I'll report back as to what is lurking around in the driver's footwell.
OK, that's what I was suspecting. Just seemed a bit unusual, and I didn't want to start unbolting things and end up with a mess ...

The driver's seat was to undergo a bit of a reconditioning at some point due to the usual bolster wear issue (see attached rather poor photo taken previously). If I'm going to be removing the seat to fix the stitching I might as well do it all at once
