Headlight bulb
The left headlight on my '80 Euro has gone out. Does anyone know which, if any, bulb at my Friendly Local Auto Parts Store will work? Tips?
(Hey! I get to ask a simple one occasionally.)

Glen,
You need a 9003 which is an H4 55/60W - should be $8.50 or there about.
I also have some 80/100w for $11.75 if you need to light up the sky.

I have them on my "Off-road" cars and they are fine.
Please ensure you specify "Off-road use only" when ordering 8>)
Have you tried a candle for your street car - far better than a 55/60W.

You are right, I had them on my 86 Audi TQ and they were wonderful, almost as good as my 67 GTO with one flame thrower on L and an aircraft landing light on the right.

Does it have the 8" Euro headlights, or the 7" US sealed beams that were a required retrofit on import? Chrome rings around the lamp mean plain old 7" US sealed beam. Take the old one with you to the parts place. If it has the 8" Euro lamps or a replacement 7" e-code reflector, look for a replacement H-4 bulb. POLAPS, sometimes even Wal-Mart for the std bulbs. High-wattage off-road only versions test the stock wiring. There's enough distributed resistance in the circuit that the current is lowered some, maybe enough to save the wiring. If you want full output, upgrade the wiring and add dedicated relays.

Use one of the OEM connectors to the lights as a source for two relays.
This will feed the trigger to one relay for the low beams, and a second relay for the high beams.
Run a heavy gauge cable from a good source (jump area?) to these relays, and again heavy gauge wire from there to the headlights.
In a few of the cars here at home, I've been able to recover another 2v of current at the lights that wasnt there before, due to insufficient cabling and/or LONG cabling through the entire headlight circuits.
Just a thought..its on my to-do list, but a fair ways down it as I work on other things.
