Default 79 fuel filter and sealing ring fit question - answered!!

I got a fuel filter and sealing ring for my car. The filter has a recessed area in the top where I assumed the cooper sealing ring should sit. The sealing ring does not sit inside the recessed area of the filter. Seems it is a tad bit larger. Should the sealing fit into the recessed area for a good seal? Will it crush when tightened to make a seal?

Thanks

Some of the fuel filters don't fit until you swap fittings off the old filter. Could that be it?
