It is fairly straightforward to make an adapter for any head unit to the factory harnesses. The 928's harness are pretty nifty in that regard since there's one for speakers and one for power/ground/alarm. You make an adapter for the power harness and either adapt to the factory speaker wiring (in the case of a unit with built-in amp) or run new wires (for a pre-out only unit.)

If not said already...the head unit isnt where you should go no-limits. But on the quality of the install, and how unobtrusive it can be. That's where good money is spent on stereos..and also where bad money is spent as well. Cuz..at some point you really, IMHO, need external amplification, and really good drivers, and somewhere, somehow..a working lower octave.

Having done back to back comparisons of head units in a previous car I can't agree. Head units are every bit as important as the rest of the system. But I do agree that a quality system and installation is critical.

I'm not planning on changing anything else, speakers will remain stock as would the stock amplifier. I just want something that will be functional with the ipod, look good and sound good.

Well..to a point, extra $ on the head doesnt create any more improvement..that $ to value curve ends pretty quickly, IMHO.

But stock speakers and amp...that'll hide a serious amount of the value spent on the head unit in Freq response and overall capability.

Just sayin...its not the WRONG thing to do, just..if there's nothing being spent on the output side, there's not much to spend on the head unit side of the issue. You cant create a response curve that simply isnt there.

Yeah I agree, speakers and amplifiers are very important for proper SQ. But modifying the car is absolutely out of the question. I figure that most higher end head units should be putting out far more power than my 20 yo CD-2 so the sound should improve regardless.

I had a McIntosh head unit in one of my GTS's along with a bunch of other goodies in the rear. You can't see the McIntosh in these pics, but it's there. http://www.928registry.org/1994-928GTS-0163.htm Great head unit! Other than that, I've seen the Porsche CDR-210 in alot of other 928's. Great looking fit too!

The best no-wiring mod solution IMO is an Ebay CDR-220, with the display modded by Jim Corenman, and an adapter harness from Stefan to connect it to the factory HU-to Amp connection

Stefan's harness at the HU:

Here's the factory harness end of Stefan's adapter:

And the pinout on the back of the CDR-220. I don't have an Ipod but I'm pretty sure there's an Ipod adpater cable that's a direct plugin on the CDR-220, but 'd bet Stefan can make an Ipod adapter if there isn't one.

Pinouts again:

C'mon, it says Porsche on already, it's perfect:

Default Blaupunkt MP68

I did my research and found that the Blaupunkt MP68 to be the best for me. It doesnt have an iPod connection but it has a flash card reader. i have 16GB of music permanently in my car. Menu scrolling is easy. It also answers my phone. I'm not sure about the sound magnitude through the internal amps - I have a 4 channel 100 watt = 1 200 watt for the sub - Kapa seakers - 105 db at 80% volume
