Default Engine Pull ?

I'm about ready to pull the engine from my '84. Just one last step remaining before it's ready to come out. I'm at the point, where all I have left to do (aside from removing the 8 bolts that hold the block to the mounts) is separate the bellhousing & flex plate from the block & flywheel. I am wondering, however, if I need to remove the heat shields and support the TT with s jack prior to removal of the bellhousing. I would think, otherwise, that the TT & bellhousing would just crash to the ground or is it supported some other way? Anyone BTDT and have any advise on the situation?

You need to support the torque tube. I'll use a jack at first and then tie it to the body as sometimes I'll want to lift/lower the car with the engine out.

Remember the wiring harness on the crossmember below the left-side exhaust manifold. According to a recent survey, 75% of first-time engine pulls involve lifting the body by that harness.
