New Bonneville racer in the works!!!
Last year I sold my 1st "lemons" racer 1979 928 5 speed to a friend who comes from a drag racing background who intended to build a street legal Bonneville record smasher out of it....
Since he only had limited interior bits to work with, he is having the Carbon Fiber shop across the street BUILD a bunch of new interior panels (think door-dash-pod-etc) out of carbon fiber!!
He is using a Chevy engine....eventually a twin turbo 5L with over 1400hp...and given the 928's known weaknesses in driveline at high HP...the decision was made to remove ALL OF IT...except for the axles....
In order to make things fit properly....the entire central tunnel was removed all the way back to the rear seat-gas tank area.....the smaller chevy V8 will sit just over 10" more rearward than stock 928 V8 and the transaxle will be a modified Corvette 6 speed designed to accept the stock 928 axle spacing....
The car will be street legal (not in CA of course) and its ultimate goal is to break the record of 217mph in the class its aiming for..... Don't think this will be a straight line only 928...it will also be on the road course too....and possibly even drag racing!! A 240mph steet legal 928 that can run sub 10 1/4 miles with some daily driver abilities
Before everyone jumps on how much weaker the body is because of the TT and tunnel removal there will be additional bracing added and the cage will be extensive adding stiffness too
Here are a couple pics of progress so far

Interesting... A couple of questions. Why is he not using a LSx based engine? Also, what class is the record for a forced induction 5L less than 220mph? My buddy is trying to get a record out there and for 1.5L it's about 200. For 2L it's about 230mph. For a 5L I would expect 275+.

There are many many classes at Bonneville and some odd ones have no one running for YEARS at a time. Select one that no one is interested in and it may just have a rather low "record". Running boost on street gas sold at Bonneville is one such group of classes for example. The 928 while not great for aerodynamics has a long wheelbase for a sports car and would be quite stabile at speed.

He also like drag racing and that will be another "venue" for the car...part of the bonneville rules says it must be a full street legal car with all window glass, bumpers, lights, etc....you can cage it......the owner has a residence in Wyoming & registers all of his race cars there....much easier to get cars registered there...bascially just show up and pay & your done....
I will keep everyone posted of the progress & we will get the car to Thunderhill for testing later next year...but with an NA engine thats going in 1st for intial testing (the one in the pic)

okay I was wrong about the transmission....it will be a 4L80E 6 speed paddle shift....here is a pic of it in place.....the rear end will be a dana super 44 and will match up to the stock 928 axles

7K for the tranny! I would have to teach 140 lesson's to buy that baby. I should have changed professions when I had the chance. Oh well, boat loads of money and a whole lot of fun! Can't wait to see the video!

There are 6L80E transmissions, but that isn't one. 4L80E are 4 speeds, but the trans in that picture is a 4L60 or 700R4. You can tell by the servo sticking out on the passenger side behind the bellhousing/on top of the valve body.
4 - 4 speed
L - longitudinal
80 - higher torque capacity than a 60
E - electronic

I really can't see a road race application for a 198 lb paddle shifter when a 70 lb dog ring will do a better job. The 128 lb savings will more than make up for the difference in shift times, don't ya think?
