Default Battery negative cable frame connection location

The negative battery cable in my car runs out of the battery compartment and is connected to the frame behind the tool cover. Owners manual seems to show this as correct.

I saw a car today that used the threaded connection inside the battery box to the rear of tha battery for the frame connection. I had assumed this was originally for a battery tie down set up although the parts manual i have does not show one. Seems a nifty way to do this and keep the cable out of the luggage area.

I have not put a MM on mine but assume this set up works as I know this car was a runner before an accident.

Anyone else using this setup? I assume Porsche ran it outside the battery box to allow for quick battery disconnect when the spare and such was installed (I don't have one).

Early cars did have the neg cable connected inside the bat box. I would assume the later change was due to ease of getting to it. Don't have to pull the spare and all that jazz to get to it.

Remember that the first connection to disconnect and the last connection to connect is the ground cable. The part you want to take on and off is more than a wrench-length from the positive terminal. With the neg cable disconnect, you can do everything except drop a wrench across the battery terminals without fear of completing a circuit with your wrench.

Plus, since that strap gets lifted for every electrical repair or investigation anyway, it's better that the connection isn't buried inside the battery well.

FWIW, when I think of "the threaded connection inside the battery box," I think of the mount for the battery hold down device/strut.

Didn't know that about the early cars, Sean.

Mine came to me the way you describe using the battery hold down.
That was the first thing I corrected.

IIRC the battery hold down bolt goes into a captive nut mounted in the battery box that is captive only by virtue of being inside a small box to stop it turning. This wouldn't make a very good earth point anyway. The real battery earth is either welded or brazed to the body - a very "positive" electrical connection by comparison.
