Default Hatch window sealant

I have some rust around my hatch lip so I pulled the trim off and I am assuming that the PO applied some extra sealant as the job does not look like a factory application.

Question is can I cut this back to facilitate treating the bare metal and if so do I need to apply anothe bead after wards.

The trim clips look like they go under the window. I have one that is broken. Can they be replaced with the window installed?

you would be best served to remove the window and clean out the old sealant new sealant can be purchased at the auto body supply shop.
Use rust converter on the all of the rusted areas then prime/ paint it then install the window

those window clips are screwed in from the inside undo the screws and it will just be the sealer holding them in, you need them to keep the window centered and the trim connected. the window should be held in with a butyle type tape sealer do not you tube style urythane or you will never be able to get the window out yourself again without some major tools. the butyle tape will come out with a piano wire to pull and cut it then just scrape the residue off with a putty knife its fairly easy once you get the hang of it i prefer a guitar string instead of a piano wire though with two wood handles to pull with good luck don't break it its always easier with a couple extra hands.

I think maybe your PO had the right idea though, to try and fill the gap with butyle so as to shed the water. He might have been too late or didn't get the gap filled completely. I have the same problem (not quite as bad) on mine and really dread opening a can of worms. Theres really no successful half measure when it comes to rust though. Good luck...Bruce

Thanks MrMerlin and Paul,

I looked through the WSM and the hatch window removal and installation is not discussed with the other windows. Did I miss it somewhere?
