Default How I primed my oil system

Last year as I prepared to button up building my stroker motor, before I put the belt on, I primed the oil pump until it gushed oil onto my foot. A few days later the retina in my right eye collapsed & I had to have major eye surgery. Several surgeries & over a year later I can see well enough to continue with my stroker. Last week I was getting ready to fire it up for the first time so I spun it over to make sure I had pressure but......NOTHING! I couldn't get anything. I removed the oil filter & spun it.......nada! I guess over a year's time the oil drained back, even though I had packed the pump with assembly lube. I asked for oil flow diagrams the other night & Rob Edwards & Landseer were nice enough to provide them. I examined them & developed this shortcut.
I made a small .125 (1/8) thick steel plate just larger than the oil filter flange.
About 2.85" in diameter. Put a .800" hole in the center to allow the oil filter mounting threads through. Drilled a small hole just off to the side to accept a plastic vacuum nipple fitting, enough to make a tight fit. Using an 81-91 Jetta spindle nut (which happens to be 20mm x 1.5, same as a 928 oil filter) I mounted the plate over the oil filter flange. I applied vacuum to the fitting with a brake system evacuation pump until oil dripped into the reservoir. Then I spun the motor over with the starter & voila! Oil all over my floor! I've never been happier to clean up a mess! Saves me the time & trouble of removing the belt to reprime the pump & retiming the engine. Thanks for everybody's help including Greg Brown's advice. If this didn't work I was going to use your tip Greg. Hope someone else can benefit from this tip.

Why did you not just put a filter on it and spin the pump drive then put the belt on it?

From what i read he did that last year when he built the motor,
its been sitting for a year.
I would also suggest that you can prime your oil pump with STP oil treatment , put the pump into the block after you fill it with the STP.
when your ready to start it ,
crank it, it will have oil pressure you can do this with the spark plugs out so there wont be any combustion forces on the bearings

I primed mine on the stand, just looped one of the cooler lines.

I used Lucas engine assembly lube, very similar to STP.
When I primed it last year it was on the stand as well.
Now the engine is in the car.

Good idea. This makes sure the oil is getting through the pick-up, through the oil pump, and to the oil filter. This is the short side of the circuit, but at least you can be sure that the oil pump is full of oil.

I like to try and get as much oil through to the bearings and up into the overhead as I can get, before I light an engine. In order to do this, you need to run oil through the center of the filter. The downside to doing this is that you are essentially "washing" away some of that engine assembly lubricant.

I had each cam cover off and ran the pump until the lifter galleys were full.

Is that not good?
Or will that do more harm than good?

I agree about the washing. But I have two containers of good 'ol GM EOS in the oil pan. The EOS has been obsolete for a while now because of the high zinc content, but I bought a case of it after it went obsolete & kept it for special engine builds I may have had in the future & this engine qualifies for that so I put 'em in. Thanks for your tips Greg.

your project was coming along -- and how is that nice hood, have

Ha ha, thanks buddy. I'm gonna try to start the motor this week. I have some fan wiring to do. I haven't fitted the final hood yet. I have a 'ballpark' hood with the shaker hole on it now but my son has made great progress with the rest of the body mods lately. I'll post you some pics. Once it's running we'll install the precise hood & paint the scoop & hood together. The rest of the body looks hot! I'll take some teaser pics for ya tomorrow. My eye surgery set me back but we're hot on it now. Thanks for the kind words. Comin' soon!
