Help, what are my wheels?
Hi all,
I just bought a 1987 S4. I've known the previous owner for the 5 years he's had the car, and he said he upgraded the wheels with a nice set he bought on Ebay for $600.
They are Porsche stock, and appear to be 5-spoke GTS wheels. But they are 16s. Aren't GTS wheels 17"? They look really sharp on an S4 let me tell you, much better than the "manhole covers".
But what are they?
Thanks,
Sean

If they are Porsche and 16in the spokes should be a little squarer or flatter than the rounded 17in GTS wheels. The 16 inch are called C2 5 Spoke. The 17 inch flat spokes are called C2 Turbo. The 17 inch rounded spokes GTS are called 993 Cup.

Well, they are definitely not the 993 wheels pictured above. They look exactly like the 968 wheels.
But they have the standard 928 S4 tires on them 205 fr/245 r. Will those fit right on the 968 wheels? Is it bad to ride on 968 wheels?

928 tires were NEVER 205...even the 15" wheel had 215's. 205 fits but is QUITE narrow for a front 928 wheel. The 928 does better with even WIDER than stock front wheels... The 928 had 225/50-16 front and 245/45-16 rears on S4 rims. The wheels were 7" wide or more on all 16" 928 wheels. Not sure of the width on the 968 wheel...

OK now,
I just went in the garage and checked, the tires are indeed 205/55 front and 245/45 rear. This is, as pointed out above, not the correct size, this front tire size is prescribed in the owner's manual for snow tires and the rear size is correct for summer tires. In Fresno, we only use summer tires
So, any guesses on how my car will handle on this strange set of tires and 968 wheels? How wrong are the offsets? They look great, so I'd rather not get rid of them, but it does look like the 7J front wheels will accommodate up to 225/50 front tires.
Did the 968 come with 8J rear wheels like the 928? The tires look great on the wheels, the bead and sidewall location looks fine in relation to the face of the wheel on both sets. So it appears that the tires fit the wheels, at least.
Any advice?

Yes yes yesss!! These are my wheels, thanks. Mine have the clearcoated "satin" finish, not the super-chrome treatment.
So, were these the same as put on the 968, or not? Now I have to go ask my friend why he put 205s on the front set. . .

205 was the stock front tire size for the 7" wide front rim. They are most likely 205 because they were "take-offs" from one of those 2 vehicles.
