Thanks Landseer. So is there a seal in there for me to change?

Here's the PET. I don't think the bolt has a seal, but the outside of the axle it holds in place does, against the inner diam of the mount. (lip seal 928 332 215 02)

So does the mount against the case (O-ring 928 332 217 02).

Ok, so I ordered the o-rings and shim gaskets to repair the leaks. I am resurrecting this to ensure I don't get in over my head and to fully understand the task from those smarter than me. So please bear with me. I will start with my illustration from PET.

Axle Shaft to Diff.jpg

My Plan (please feel free to correct me)

1. Follow Dwayne's write up to remove to half-shafts (Thanks Dwayne)
2. Drain the Diff (Is this necessary?)
3. Remove Hex Bolt #19 (Is this going to cause parts to fall off in the Diff - sorry but this is asked on the basis that there no such thing as a stupid question and I need reassurance).
4. Remove 6 bolts holding the Housing #14
5. Replace O-Ring
6. Replace the Shim Gasket
7. Re-install the Housing
8. Re-install the Joint Flange

I did the wrenching for my TB/WP/OP/MM/Porkensioner but I am very unsure about doing this myself. I am not sure why. Is this the way this should be done?

Note to Landseer: Yes, I would love to see a picture of what is behind the Housing #14. Email to hessank@gmail.com

Please and thanks in advance.

If it is not leaking on the aluminium bearing holder, to diff casing do not replace that seal.

I find it more likely to be the wiper seal that the half shaft flange goes through.

Colin, please refer to Post #14 where I pointed out the leak. By wiper seal you referring to Part #15 which means I only need to remove the centre bolt?

Hessank,
Where did you order these seals from? I'm working on the same area, and see similar seepage. Also, where are you located? I'm 30 minutes north of London, ON.

BigAl: parts ordered from Downtown Fine Cars in Toronto. Pfaff Porsche is closer to you in the west end. O-Ring is $30.76 , Gasket is $16.03 and the Shaft Sealing ring is $30.91 each (will take about 3 days after the order). I am in Pickering.

Thanks Hessank,
If you run into any problems with replacing these seals, please post so I can be prepared too. Nice looking shark!

If part 13 is a real SHIM, its thickness might be critcial to diff lash, and that should not be changed. If its really just a gasket, then replacement should be ok. I suggest you ask the question. If the parts people did NOT ask 'what thickness', you are probably ok. If the leak is at seal 15, removing bolt 19 and flange 18 whould give you access to the seal, 15.

To replace the wiper seal, yes you simply remove the center bolt (iirc this is only 15 ft lbs). Pull out the stub shaft, and replace the seal.

I doubt highly that it is the o-ring as it does not move. If it is leaking then it was probably damaged on assembly, or if a prior owner was messing with it.

However if you need to replace the o-ring, you need to remove the rear diff cover, and make sure that you do NOT loose the shims that are between that aluminium housing and differential case.
You need to remove the differential cover so that you can lift/position the differential as you reinstall that bearing carrier.
As stated, do not loose those shims, and ensure they go back in the same order they came out. If they do not then you will have to readjust bearing preload and ring and pinion backlash which is something most people simply do not have the ability to get into, especially with how complex the factory manual makes it out to be!

Thanks JP & Colin. I will only change the wiper seal (Part #15). This is great. Now I can go at it with more confidence. Thanks everyone.

Once again, note the torque on that center bolt, it is very low amounts, and if it will strip the inside guts easily.

Greetings from Berlin!

DId you have any difficulty removing or Installing the # 15 seal?

Will be doing this myself and any advice would be apreciated before I dive in....always seems I need a new tool while in there and it slows the whole thing down.

Many thanks,

DDay
